This time of year in Oxford is magical – the leaves turning, the air getting a little nippy, and the scent of hot chocolate in the air. But don't think that just because the weather's cooling down that our fashion game has to take a nap. In fact, it's time to embrace the colours of the season, layer like a pro, and give those ballet-inspired looks a distinctly autumnal spin!
Now, I know what you're thinking - tutus in autumn? Maybe a little unexpected, right? But bear with me. Tutus are a symbol of elegance, and a dash of whimsy, and with the right styling, they can fit seamlessly into an autumn wardrobe, even in Oxford. Think about it – they are basically layers of beautiful fabric – perfect for the changing seasons.
Layering Up with FlairAutumn's all about layers, right? That's why I absolutely adore using a tutu as the foundation for a stylish ensemble. A full tutu worn over a simple black dress is a classic, but if you want something a little less theatrical, a midi tutu – think a bit more whimsical than a full tutu, with just a couple of layers – can be amazing over a pair of tailored trousers or a skirt, with a chunky knitted sweater. It's that playful combination of chic and casual that I adore!
To complete the look, add tights. You can’t go wrong with a classic pair of black opaques, but a pop of colour in jewel tones like burgundy or deep teal can also work wonders. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colours.
Now, what's an autumn look without the right accessories? Let’s talk hats – they’re such a statement piece! A floppy felt fedora will complete the look and give it a touch of vintage elegance. A cute pair of earmuffs, or even a beret, will not only keep you warm but can add a touch of personality.
As for footwear, think chunky heeled ankle boots or brogues to keep those toes toasty, or even Mary Janes. If it’s a bit colder, add a pair of cosy knee-high socks with ankle boots. And finally, what would any autumnal look be without a stylish bag? I personally love a satchel bag – it’s functional, stylish and holds all my essentials, including a hot water bottle to keep my fingers warm!
Ballet and Colour - An Ode to AutumnYou guys know how much I love colour. And autumn is just overflowing with gorgeous hues. Think vibrant reds like crimson and burgundy, deep yellows like mustard, rich oranges like amber, and all the gorgeous browns of the earth. These colours can elevate any tutu-based outfit.
My absolute favourite autumn look? A gorgeous black velvet midi tutu, paired with a burgundy knitted cardigan, topped off with a pair of gold heeled ankle boots - effortlessly elegant, don't you think? The darker shades of burgundy bring out a lovely richness, and that's exactly what autumn is all about.
