The Tutu Report: December 1997

Darling, as we sashay towards the festive season, the December ballet world, just like the dazzling winter landscape, is awash with a glittering kaleidoscope of colour and texture. This month, let's dive into the heart of it all – the ever-enchanting, always-iconic Tutu!

Oh, the tutus this month! From the sublime to the whimsical, designers have gone all out to add a little bit of je ne sais quoi to our favourite ballet staples. Here's my personal pick of the most exquisite tutus from this festive ballet season. My dears, the tutu is, and shall always be, the crowning jewel of any ballet performance!

The Season's Tutus:
  • The Royal Ballet's production of Swan Lake opened to rapturous applause, and one couldn't help but be mesmerised by the exquisite craftsmanship of the swans' tutus, each feather seeming to float and tremble on air.
  • In the ethereal, otherworldly ballet Giselle, the Paris Opera Ballet brought a touch of the romantic and ethereal. The shimmering tutus were as if spun from moonlight. Simply sublime!
  • Then, there was the astonishing La Bayadere. The vibrant tutus for the Kingdom of The Golden Idol - imagine that luxurious saffron and gold! It’s as if you could almost hear the chimes of temple bells.
  • And finally, there was the magnificent New York City Ballet's Nutcracker. My darlings, the Sugar Plum Fairy’s tutu in the "Waltz of the Flowers" was divine - shimmering, sparkling, a veritable cloud of pastel pink tulle which almost defied gravity.

A final word: remember darlings, a tutu is more than just fabric, it is the embodiment of artistry and graceful beauty!
