The Tutu – A Fashion Triumph This Month

Oh, darlings! The ballet season this month has been simply dazzling! We’ve been spoiled by exquisitely graceful performances and a most delightful display of fashion in the most elegant form, of course, the tutu! As a seasoned connoisseur of all things tutus – having myself a collection large enough to house a whole theatre, indeed, one that’s been meticulously curated over some six decades - I felt particularly inspired by the creativity on display.

From the sumptuous satin of the Royal Ballet’s Giselle to the ethereal gossamer lightness of the Paris Opera Ballet’s La Bayadère, tutus have swept me off my feet this month!

Some absolute highlights:

  • The Romantic Tutu - The delicate layers of tulle in Giselle simply sent shivers down my spine! It was like a whisper of clouds dancing on air! That perfect shade of ivory, just a little ivory. Simply sublime.
  • The Imperial Tutu – A favourite! In La Bayadère, we were treated to tutus in sumptuous velvets, oh, my darlings, these must have weighed a tonne! So full of sumptuous layers, they must have taken weeks to stitch! A touch of drama and a masterpiece of engineering.
  • The Whimsical Tutu – In Swan Lake , there was such playful use of white and black to portray Odette and Odile! One minute soft as swan’s down, the next all steely drama! Simply magnificent! Such exquisite balance.

Now darling, I must get back to my own collection - with such fabulous displays of tulle I just have to give it a good polish and admire! I will, of course, be penning an article in next month’s journal – there’s just so much to say about all those amazing tutus!
