The Tutu of the Month - August 1998

Darling, August has been simply divine for the tutu enthusiast, havenโ€™t you simply adored the fashion offerings in our ballet world this month? We have seen some simply spectacular and utterly delightful tulle frocks that have simply set our hearts fluttering.

I was absolutely besotted by the gorgeous Giselle revival at Covent Garden, simply enchanting. The ethereal ballerinas flitting about in those wispy white tutus, practically melting into the air. So exquisitely romantic, utterly divine. The detail on those bodices was quite exquisite and their tulle danced so exquisitely โ€“ it truly was heavenly.

Now the tutu darling, a truly essential wardrobe staple - I am delighted that I managed to get my hands on one of those sensational new tutus that the Royal Ballet wore for the opening night of their new production of Swan Lake - absolutely magnificent! It's got all the traditional features you could desire darling - that lovely sweeping bell shape, the layers of glorious white tulle. A vision of elegance and grace - truly captivating.

I just adore that tutu that Margot Fonteyn wore as Odette - such perfect drama! And oh! I nearly forgot to mention that darling Anna-Marie Holmes absolutely dazzled in her pink tutu during her exquisite portrayal of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Simply a triumph darling, and such a dazzlingly magnificent stage presence. Those delicate flowers on her bodice... sheer perfection!

On a different note, the contemporary ballet Alice, in all its avant-garde brilliance, used a completely unexpected style of tutu. Those layers of black tulle on those dancers were like gothic fairy tales, and they moved in this wonderful way, almost defying gravity, you couldn't take your eyes off them! Simply exquisite.

Well darling, it's been a fabulous month for the tutu, and with a new season of ballet coming, the anticipation for fabulous tutus is simply breathtaking!
