Ballet Tutu Fashion and Style at www pink tutu com

Oh darling, the tutus this month have been positively divine! Let's just say the ballet world has been positively dripping in fashion, from the spring openings at Covent Garden, to those fabulously flamboyant premières in New York.

Speaking of fabulous, there's been a definite shift in the tutu trends this season. We're seeing less of the traditional, frilly ballerina look, and much more of a focus on clean lines, bold shapes and, dare I say, even a touch of punk. At the Bolshoi's opening, the corps de ballet were all dressed in these sleek, black, knee-length tutus with a single, dramatically sweeping, crimson ruffle, it was so modern and just utterly, utterly chic.

Then of course, there was that incredible opening at the Met, a modern, abstract ballet, and they had these brilliant geometric tutus with multi-colored panels and a real sense of movement. Quite avant-garde but absolutely captivating. It's as though the designers are using the tutu as a canvas for their imagination, not just as a costume, and the effect is breathtaking.

Another fascinating trend has been the return of the 'bare leg' tutu, seen recently in "La Bayadere." Forget the tights, it's all about showing those beautifully sculpted legs in all their glory. It creates this beautiful contrast between the floaty tulle of the skirt and the lean lines of the dancer. Very powerful.

What to Look out For
  • Colour Blocking : think bold blocks of color like shocking pink and cerulean blue against a backdrop of black - think the '80s but make it fashion!
  • Asymmetrical Shapes : designers are ditching the perfect, symmetrical tutu, and opting for one-sided skirts that cascade dramatically down the stage
  • Delicate Fabrics: tulle is definitely taking a back seat this year in favour of softer, more flowing fabrics such as silk chiffons and lace. Imagine a diaphanous whirl of fabric, it's divine!

Darling, I simply cannot wait for the next month to see what glorious tutu creations await us!
