July 1997: A whirl of tutus and tiaras across the globe
Oh, darling, the ballet world is buzzing like a beehive in a honeypot this summer. It's all sequins and smiles as companies pirouette across continents, leaving a trail of shimmering memories in their wake. I've been flitting between London, New York, and Paris, absorbing the delights and the drama, and I simply must share my observations with you, my dearest readers.
A regal affair in London
Let's start our journey at the heart of the English ballet scene - the Royal Opera House. The Royal Ballet, under the dynamic leadership of Monica Mason, is simply flourishing! Their summer season is a dazzling mix of classical favourites and new productions, all a feast for the eyes and the soul. The current run of "The Sleeping Beauty" is simply divine, with Darcey Bussell delivering a Tchaikovsky-worthy performance as the enchanting Aurora. Her ethereal grace and technically impeccable execution had the entire auditorium holding its breath in hushed admiration. Her adagio was a masterclass in elegance, and the final act’s grand pas de deux with Jonathan Cope was pure magic. Cope himself, now a principal dancer, is a veritable stage legend, his mature charisma perfectly complementing Bussell’s innocent beauty. Their chemistry is as compelling as it is electrifying. The costumes, reminiscent of a faded but still opulent Victorian dream, were simply exquisite, and the production as a whole had a timeless, almost mythical feel that transported me right into the heart of the fairytale.
The Royal Ballet also delighted us with a truly stunning new production of "Giselle" directed by the illustrious Rudolf Nureyev, in collaboration with the genius of Jean-Christophe Maillot. It was a masterpiece of emotional complexity, with an exceptionally potent and thought-provoking score. I was especially taken with Alina Cojocaru’s performance - her Giselle was both fragile and resolute, her interpretation heartbreaking yet deeply moving.
New York, New York!
Speaking of groundbreaking and bold, let's fly across the pond to New York City and the New York City Ballet. This company, under the visionary direction of Peter Martins, is a beacon of contemporary innovation. The world premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s “Concerto DSCH,” set to Dmitri Shostakovich’s beloved Concerto in D, is truly one for the record books. It features beautiful choreography inspired by Shostakovich’s own personal tragedies and triumphs. I found myself mesmerized by the sophistication of the dancer's movements - every glance, every extension, every gesture imbued with emotion and storytelling. I must confess, I find myself drawn again and again to Ratmansky's artistry - his choreography is like poetry in motion! But let's not forget the brilliance of New York City Ballet's repertoire pieces. "Agon" by Jerome Robbins always remains a modern masterpiece, with its unique blend of wit and elegance, while the timeless classic, "Swan Lake," was re-imagined in a new light by Peter Martins, offering freshness and a unique contemporary feel.
The French Fancy
The allure of Paris never ceases to enchant! In the magical City of Lights, I was utterly captivated by a stunning production of “La Bayadère” at the Paris Opera Ballet. The Grand Ballet du Palais Garnier truly exuded exquisite elegance and undeniable technique. The ethereal choreography sparked a wave of emotion, leaving me with a lasting impression of pure artistic grace. I was particularly taken with the masterful performance by Nicolas Le Riche - his solo was simply spellbinding! The sumptuous costumes - a riot of colour and gleaming jewels - were truly the highlight of this spectacular production.
Of course, a Parisian ballet season would be incomplete without a visit to the "Grand Theatre de l'Opéra Garnier", the home of Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris. It's one of those iconic theaters that seems to ooze artistic genius from every ornate corner. Their current production of "Sylvia", a romantic ballet based on a Greek myth, captivated me with its intricate steps and elegant staging. The Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris company has a certain Je ne sais quoi that simply cannot be replicated - its combination of precision and spirit is pure magic.
Ballet in bloom
Oh, it was such a thrill to witness so many innovative productions, talented dancers, and unforgettable performances during this exhilarating ballet season! I’ve barely scratched the surface of what this fascinating world has to offer. There are so many exciting productions on the horizon – from international touring companies to rising star dancers. But for now, let us savor the sweet memories of these breathtaking ballet performances, each a tiny jewel in the vast tapestry of artistic excellence!
As I pen these words, my heart flutters with the joy and awe inspired by the sheer beauty and unmatched artistry of ballet. It truly is a world of enchantment and grace.
Until next time, darlings,
Stay fabulous,
