February 1999

Darling, the world of ballet has been positively simmering this month! It’s been a whirl of tutus and tiaras, diamonds and drama – and frankly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I've been jetting between continents, sampling the latest offerings from Paris, Moscow, and even that hotbed of modern dance, New York City. Buckle up, darlings, it’s going to be a glamorous ride.

A Touch of Parisian Magic

I must confess to having a bit of a soft spot for the OpĂ©ra de Paris – after all, who doesn't adore a bit of Gallic chic? Their recent production of “La BayadĂšre” was, well, simply divine. Sylvie Guillem, that breathtaking ballerina, graced the stage as Nikiya. Every pliĂ©, every arabesque – pure artistry! She glided, she soared, she even shed a tear (don't worry, darling, just a bit of theatrical embellishment). And that iconic “Kingdom of the Shades” scene – the perfect blend of mystery and beauty. If you’re ever in Paris, this is a must-see. I practically inhaled the intoxicating mix of exoticism, sensuality, and sheer skill – and don't even get me started on the exquisite costumes, fit for a Mughal princess. Absolutely dreamy.

Moscow’s Ballet Powerhouse

But the real showstopper this month, darling, was the Bolshoi Ballet’s performance of “Swan Lake.” Let's be honest, this is a ballet that can be a tad predictable. But these Russians managed to inject freshness into every scene, bringing the timeless tale to life in an entirely new and breathtaking way. I especially adored Svetlana Zakharova as Odette-Odile, her graceful leaps and breathtaking extensions were simply astounding. And those pas de deux! It's almost as if she was flying – almost! It truly was a spectacle of power, precision, and raw passion. After the curtain fell, I think the entire audience was left breathless. If you have any chance to see the Bolshoi perform this ballet – do it!

Across the Atlantic – A Dance of Diversity

You simply cannot talk about ballet today without a nod to New York City. While my inner-fashionista was initially drawn to the Metropolitan Opera Ballet's lavish staging of "Giselle," it was a tiny, intimate performance by the American Ballet Theatre's Studio Company that truly stole my heart. It featured an intriguing piece by the young, up-and-coming choreographer, Paul Taylor, a master of modern dance with a bold, athletic style. It was quite a departure from the classic ballets that I usually gravitate towards, but it left a lasting impression. His dancers, with their almost-athletic movements, gave me a sense of real emotion and honesty. It challenged my preconceived notions of dance and truly broadened my horizons.

New Faces and Fresh Moves

Speaking of new horizons, it’s been a joy watching a new generation of talented ballerinas grace the stages of the world. In New York, the lithe, graceful Misty Copeland captured my attention, while the powerful presence of the young Russian dancer, Anastasia Volochkhova, in Moscow had the entire audience entranced. I can’t wait to see what these gifted dancers accomplish in the years to come. They're proof positive that the world of ballet is ever-evolving, adapting, and growing stronger with every season.

Fashion and Fantasy: Beyond the Footlights

Naturally, darling, it’s not just the performances themselves that leave me swooning. Oh no! It's the world that surrounds them – the beautiful clothes, the elaborate settings, the glamour. I must confess that my eye is always caught by the designers, those masterminds who craft the dazzling costumes, transforming dancers into ethereal creatures, goddesses, and heroes. It's all about finding the perfect harmony between fashion and fantasy.

An Art Form For Everyone

Ballet, darling, isn’t just about twirling tutus and grand jetĂ©s. It's an art form that resonates with everyone, evoking powerful emotions and telling timeless stories. This month, I’ve been reminded of the universality and power of this incredible art form, reaching across cultural and generational boundaries. I can’t wait to see what next month brings, the ballet world is brimming with possibilities, and I’m ready to discover them all, from the bright lights of New York to the grand theaters of Europe.
