The Dance World This Autumn

Darling, it’s October and, oh my, what a feast for the eyes the dance world is presenting this autumn! From the fiery passion of Spain to the icy grace of the Russian Bolshoi, the world stage is alight with an explosion of creativity. It’s a symphony of steps, a chorus of tulle, a visual and emotional extravaganza. So settle into your plush velvet seats, darling, let the lights dim and prepare to be transported

Parisian Chic at the Palais Garnier

I kicked off my sartorial tour de force in the City of Lights, naturally. Paris, the epicenter of chic, always knows how to deliver on its promises. And the Palais Garnier, resplendent in its opulent Art Nouveau glory, was the setting for an electrifying evening. It was an evening of two halves, so to speak, that perfectly showcased the range and depth of ballet.

The first half, dedicated to the work of Balanchine, was a sublime journey into the elegant, precise world of neoclassical ballet. The dancers, draped in white like graceful swans, were a blur of balletic precision, and Balanchine’s trademark angularity was both intoxicating and invigorating. Oh, how the delicate beauty of these pieces captured the Parisian essence: a hint of aloofness, a touch of theatricality, but always underpinned by an undeniable elegance. The ballet, it must be said, was like the perfect couture dress: stunning on its own, but elevated by the incredible artistry of these extraordinary dancers.

But then came the piĂšce de rĂ©sistance - the second half, featuring "Le Corsaire." I know, darling, it sounds rather old hat, doesn’t it? But let me tell you, this was not your grandma’s “Corsaire.” Director Patrice Bart breathed new life into the romanticism, infusing it with a darkly dramatic intensity that captivated the audience. I almost gasped when I first saw the pirate ship, realistically staged and so alive, it was like a little bit of history had sprung to life.

But the real triumph, darling, was the dance. The corps de ballet were nothing short of masterful, and the soloists, breathtakingly talented. The principal dancer, Marie-AgnÚs Gillot, stole the show with her captivating presence. I practically heard gasps in the audience! She radiated vulnerability and strength, flipping effortlessly into fouettés and leaps with a dynamism I had not witnessed in years. And don't even get me started on the dramatic flair of the sword fighting scenes - so thrilling and captivating! This is ballet elevated to an art form, and the Parisian audience went absolutely wild!

A Touch of Flamenco Fever in Seville

From the understated elegance of Paris, I took flight to Seville, Spain, where the fiery heart of flamenco pulsed with a visceral intensity that couldn't be contained. The ballet at the Teatro de la Maestranza wasn't simply dance; it was a symphony of movement, music, and emotion.

The performance I witnessed showcased the work of renowned choreographer Nacho Duato. It was a tapestry of bold gestures and captivating narratives woven around the traditional Spanish music, creating an atmosphere that was both deeply moving and intensely exhilarating.

Each movement flowed with the fiery energy of the castanets, the passion of the music, and the graceful artistry of the dancers, each one an epitome of Spanish beauty and elegance. They moved with a breathtaking blend of fluidity and power, their bodies swaying in perfect synchronization with the music, a passionate ode to life itself. You could see the raw emotion reflected in their eyes and every movement, an exquisite ballet unlike any I have seen before. There’s a sensual undercurrent that makes it impossible to watch without a shiver, but also an elegant beauty, a deep sadness, a story told without words. Simply divine!

St. Petersburg - Where Ballet Still Reigns

After the searing heat of Seville, I ventured to the chilly embrace of St. Petersburg, the birthplace of Russian ballet. And at the famed Mariinsky Theatre, it was all about classic ballet, the sort that truly makes one understand the origin of ballet itself. This was an experience, darling, that felt like walking into the pages of a history book.

It was "The Sleeping Beauty" they performed, of course. One simply cannot go to the Mariinsky without experiencing this majestic production, with the gorgeous Tchaikovsky score and choreography by Marius Petipa, it was a beautiful spectacle. I was transported back in time, surrounded by opulence and elegance that transcended time itself. The sets were truly spectacular. This was theatre, but elevated to the grand scale of Russian imperial ballet. But what truly captured my heart was the purity of the dance.

Each ballerina, with her powdered face and tiara, seemed to have sprung to life from a romantic illustration, her movements echoing the grand style of ballet. From the delicate bourrées to the intricate pirouettes, the choreography was flawlessly executed, each dancer a symphony of grace and power. It was a performance that spoke of an age where dance was revered, where each movement was an homage to an artistic tradition as old as time. I felt a profound reverence, a connection to the heart of ballet itself.

From Imperial Splendor to Modern Majesty - London

From the imperial grandeur of St. Petersburg, I made my way to the vibrant heart of London, where ballet has taken on a different hue. The Royal Opera House, with its iconic façade and historical aura, served as the backdrop for a ballet experience that felt like a conversation with modernity itself. The contemporary ballet scene in London is bubbling with energy, full of experimentation, innovation, and a thirst for something new, which makes it a truly exciting place to witness ballet.

My eyes were particularly captivated by Wayne McGregor’s “Raven,” a breathtaking performance with such a beautiful balance of strength and grace, of dark and light. The contemporary choreography was truly mesmerising, demanding from the dancers incredible flexibility and an awareness of their bodies. And they delivered! I simply cannot convey the way McGregor captures the essence of the human spirit - its joy, pain, vulnerability, and resilience - all of it expressed through the eloquent language of movement. The music by Michael Nyman perfectly complimented the dance - there’s an atmosphere created, you know, an emotional experience that transcends the physical spectacle, the dancing bodies. The costumes too, so black, sleek, almost menacing at times, and yet with an almost organic fluidity that spoke of the very essence of life.

I loved seeing “Raven” at the Royal Opera House, which in itself is an iconic symbol of London’s cultural history, and then to walk the cobbled streets afterward, taking in the sights of this beautiful city, still vibrating with the creative energy of “Raven” was, as the Londoners like to say, simply divine. The perfect night, a delicious mix of artistic spectacle and that uniquely London blend of tradition and trend-setting.

Across the Pond to New York

To truly capture the breadth and brilliance of the contemporary ballet scene, one must look across the pond to New York. Here, ballet is dynamic, bold, unapologetic in its embrace of the cutting-edge and innovative. The dance studios, the stages, are cauldrons of creativity, churning out works that break new ground. The New York City Ballet has long been at the forefront of contemporary ballet, but what impressed me most about my recent visit was the extraordinary “Interplay" production.

This unique work, an absolute tour de force, is a testament to the talent of Christopher Wheeldon, one of the brightest stars in contemporary dance today. A mesmerizing blend of jazz, classical and contemporary, he creates pieces that are powerful, elegant, a bit unsettling and undeniably beautiful. The music for this production was provided by the composer Nico Muhly and, believe me, it's a thrilling mix.

What “Interplay” is, darling, is a dialogue of styles. There’s that classical grounding and, layered on top of that, an energetic athleticism so thrilling to witness, all the while retaining an inherent elegance that is so distinctly Christopher Wheeldon. He challenges and pushes dancers and, boy, does he make them deliver. You could feel the passion in their every step and hear the stories told through the incredible fluidity of their movement. Wheeldon really excels at that storytelling without words, an abstract narrative where he is exploring relationships - of people, ideas, cultures, all those things, that's the kind of choreographer he is, a profound intellect that manifests through his breathtaking artistic creations.

My Final Thoughts

As I journeyed across the world, soaking up the spectacle of each performance, a single truth resonated in my heart: ballet is a language without borders. The language of elegance, grace, strength and human emotion, it's a form that transcends national boundaries, captivating audiences everywhere.

This autumn, darling, the dance world is abuzz with a vibrancy that reflects the soul of our times. It is bold and innovative, steeped in tradition yet ever evolving, pushing boundaries while staying true to the timeless allure of this beautiful art form.

So let’s all grab our sequins, our opera glasses, and dive into this breathtaking spectacle, darling. It's a season of dreams and grace, and it is truly magnificent.
