December 2005 - The Season of Giving and Glittering Tutus

As the festive season approaches and the crisp air nips at one's nose, we find ourselves surrounded by the twinkling lights of Christmas and the promise of magical evenings at the ballet. Oh, how delightful to escape the chill and immerse oneself in a world of artistry, beauty, and athleticism. And indeed, December 2005 delivered just that, a feast for the senses and the soul, from the heart of London to the bright lights of Broadway.

A Parisian Gem - "Giselle" at the Palais Garnier

One cannot discuss December ballet without acknowledging the spectacular production of "Giselle" at the Palais Garnier in Paris. Oh, how we long to visit this iconic opera house, the embodiment of romance and timeless elegance. And here, the production lived up to every expectation. The costumes, my dears, were simply breathtaking. They evoked an era of lace and romance, with Giselle's ethereal white dress a whisper of a dream. And the choreography - how exquisite! The intricate steps, the graceful leaps, and the raw emotion conveyed in each movement left the audience spellbound. The Parisian audience, as always, a sophisticated and discerning crowd, roared their approval. And the leading dancers, with their technical prowess and heartfelt interpretations, ensured that Giselle's tragic story unfolded with unparalleled poignancy.

Homeward Bound - The Royal Ballet's "Nutcracker"

Back home in London, we find the Royal Ballet gracing the stage with their enchanting "Nutcracker" production. Now, this ballet is as much a Christmas tradition as mistletoe and mince pies. And the Royal Ballet never fails to deliver, each year bringing a fresh energy and delightful twist. The Christmas Eve setting at the Royal Opera House is pure magic - the soaring ceilings, the glittering decorations, and the hushed anticipation that hangs in the air. This year, the corps de ballet's performance as snowflakes was absolutely breathtaking. They swirled and glided, each one a delicate snowflake in the wintry scene. And our dear friend, Darcey Bussell, once again melted hearts as the Sugar Plum Fairy. Her graceful leaps and delicate elegance simply stole the show, leaving us in awe of her artistry.

Across the Pond - The American Ballet Theatre's "Sleeping Beauty"

And who can forget the enchanting "Sleeping Beauty" at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York? This year's American Ballet Theatre production proved a triumph, dazzling the discerning New York audience with its visual spectacle. The costumes, as we are used to from the ABT, were beyond flamboyant. The prince's dazzling gold doublet, the princesses' sumptuous silks, and Aurora's magnificent tutu - all perfectly complimenting the grand design of the production. I have to mention the masterful choreography, paying homage to the original but adding contemporary flourishes. And the final act with the grand corps de ballet? Oh my! A riot of colour and energy. This was truly ballet at its very finest.

A Christmas in London - Beyond Ballet

Of course, December isn't just about grand ballet productions. The month bursts with Christmas cheer and delightful diversions. We particularly enjoyed the festive extravaganza, "A Christmas Carol" at the Royal Albert Hall, complete with dazzling costumes, a truly magical score, and enough glitter to make your eyes sparkle.

A Bit of Nonsense - "The Importance of Being Earnest"

Now, sometimes one requires a touch of wit to balance the festivities, and what could be more charming than the enduring masterpiece by Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest?" Currently gracing the stage at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, this adaptation offered sparkling dialogue and a perfect ensemble cast. Oh, how the audience guffawed! We do love a bit of nonsense in the heart of December, and this play delivered in spades.

A Stylish Note - The New Year Beckons

As December winds down and the new year dawns, we find ourselves anticipating the excitement of what ballet 2006 holds in store. Whether it be the thrilling energy of "Swan Lake," the tragic drama of "Romeo and Juliet," or perhaps a whimsical foray into a world of fairies and fantasy, one thing is for sure: ballet will continue to enchant and enthrall. After all, what else could so beautifully capture the magic of the human spirit?
