Ballet Around the World: February 2006 Darlings, I must say, the world of ballet is simply buzzing with activity this month! It seems like everywhere I turn, there’s a new production vying for my attention. From the hallowed halls of the Bolshoi to the trendy spaces of New York, ballet is blossoming in every corner of the globe. And naturally, yours truly has been keeping my perfectly manicured fingertips firmly on the pulse of all things pirouette. Parisian Elegance and Parisian Chaos Firstly, a trip to Paris simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Palais Garnier, a temple of balletic grace, wouldn’t you agree? The Opéra de Paris recently revived their stunning production of **La Bayadère**, a feast for the senses that transcends time itself. The sheer opulence of the production – think jewel-toned costumes and shimmering sets – was enough to take my breath away. I particularly loved the opulent grandeur of the "Kingdom of the Shades" scene, a masterpiece of visual storytelling. It is said to be one of the longest ballet performances on the world, which, darling, I must admit, left my poor feet a little weary. Speaking of weary, I did find myself a little underwhelmed by the Paris Opera’s “new” version of **Le Sacre du Printemps**, the groundbreaking work that sparked an infamous riot when it first premiered in 1913. While I respect the choreographers attempt to reimagine this iconic work, it lacked the raw, primal power and chaotic energy of the original, you know, that edge of chaos that keeps ballet exciting. New York: Where Creativity Knows No Bounds Across the pond in New York City, I had the pleasure of attending a stunning performance of the **New York City Ballet’s annual gala**. I was, of course, enthralled by the traditional classics, from the grace and ethereal beauty of **Swan Lake** to the thrilling spectacle of **Romeo and Juliet**, the company was simply radiant. However, it was the New York City Ballet’s showcase of their new and upcoming choreographers that truly captivated my attention. In particular, I was drawn to Justin Peck’s **Year of the Rabbit**, a quirky, clever piece that offered a playful critique of society's obsession with trends and the ever-evolving nature of what we consider "fashionable" today. The use of contemporary music was refreshingly bold. Peck certainly deserves recognition for his audacity in incorporating music from modern artists like The Strokes into the ballet world! Darling, he just gets me! Beyond the Big Apple: A New Ballet Scene Emerges However, ballet is not just confined to the glamorous capitals, darlings! There's a wealth of talent simmering in the most unexpected of places, too! I must admit I'm particularly impressed by the burgeoning scene in the Dutch city of Amsterdam. A contemporary ballet troupe called **Introdans** captivated me with their stunningly intricate contemporary piece, **“The Mirror”** by Han Ebbeling, that blends elements of storytelling, movement, and lighting in a breathtaking way. They have achieved what so few other contemporary ballet troupes attempt: originality and depth. A truly remarkable performance. I suspect the Netherlands will be producing a lot more rising stars in the years to come, darling! Russia: Where Tradition Lives On And what would a review of ballet be without mentioning Russia? It’s simply unthinkable! I took a trip to Moscow to see the legendary **Bolshoi Ballet** perform **The Nutcracker**, and, my dear, it was absolutely sublime! The Bolshoi, steeped in tradition, is renowned for its extraordinary classical technique. The precision and artistry were simply mesmerizing. But even beyond the breathtaking virtuosity, it was the raw, emotional power of each performance that truly resonated. I felt as though I had been transported to a magical world of winter wonder, where anything is possible, and I felt a deep emotional connection to the story, particularly to the charming character of Marie. Across the Globe: Where Elegance Meets Boldness Meanwhile, the **National Ballet of China** is also drawing rave reviews this month, performing a striking new production of **The Red Detachment of Women**. A beautiful combination of classical ballet, traditional Chinese dance and powerful political drama. This ambitious production offered a compelling and deeply affecting experience, which challenged the very notion of what constitutes "ballet" while upholding a spirit of grace and precision. Simply fascinating! And finally, let's take a trip down to sunny Australia, shall we? The **Australian Ballet**, which I must admit has often felt a little lacklustre, has surprisingly outdone themselves this month. Their interpretation of **Giselle** was a captivating reimagining of the classic story, offering an original, edgy twist while still capturing the elegance and tragic love of the original ballet. I particularly loved the use of darker hues in the costumes, adding a new dimension to the story. There is a new depth to the Australian Ballet and I’m thrilled! **What's next for ballet?** Darling, it is exciting to see so much creative energy within the ballet world. The genre is truly flourishing, constantly pushing boundaries and inspiring audiences. From the grand traditions of the Bolshoi to the daring innovations of the American companies, the future of ballet looks brighter than ever! One thing is certain: the ballet world is truly captivating us in every corner of the globe, and I for one, am ready for another fabulous month of exciting ballet performances!
