May 2006: A Season of Splendour

The world of ballet, darling, has been positively sizzling this past month, with dazzling performances sweeping across continents. From the exquisite precision of the Bolshoi to the raw passion of a South American troupe, the air has crackled with brilliance. Let's dive into the intoxicating whirlpool of art, shall we?

Moscow: The Bolshoi’s Swan Lake

My dears, the Bolshoi’s “Swan Lake” was nothing short of a revelation! A revival of a timeless classic, this production exuded the majestic grandeur one expects from Moscow's cultural jewel. The staging was exquisite – the swans themselves seemed to glide with ethereal grace, and the dramatic shifts from the lightness of Odette to the dark power of Odile were rendered with remarkable finesse. A performance that made one truly believe in fairy tales, darling!

  • Svetlana Zakharova's Odette and Odile were the epitome of ballet perfection. Her technical mastery was simply astounding, every movement a perfect blend of strength and delicacy. One could almost hear a hush descend upon the audience as she performed the famous thirty-two fouettĂ©s – simply divine!
  • The corps de ballet, oh they were utterly mesmerizing. A wave of pristine white tulle, each dancer executed their movements with such precision and artistry, they could have been a flock of real swans gliding upon the stage.
  • One mustn’t forget the gentlemen, of course. The Prince's solo, danced by the enchanting Vladimir Shklyarov, was pure romance, conveying a depth of emotion that brought tears to my eyes.
  • The sets, darling, they were beyond comparison! The use of light and shadow perfectly enhanced the mystique, and the lavish costumes sparkled with a timeless elegance. Such opulence!

While the Bolshoi production left me breathless, I do find myself whispering "à la française" as I think about the sheer beauty of a Parisian dance experience.

Paris: A New “Bolero”

Now, in the heart of Paris, where else but at the OpĂ©ra Garnier could a ballet company reinterpret Ravel’s iconic “Bolero” in such a dramatic and unexpected way? It’s a work that has always held a certain aura of sultriness and the company brought it to life with an almost unyielding sense of sensuality. The stage, bathed in deep hues of purple, felt almost mystical as the dancers, clad in costumes evoking the sinuous curves of modern art, engaged in a choreographed exploration of lust, passion, and ultimate loss. It’s a production that will certainly stay with me for a long time to come. It’s not your usual sugarplum fairy experience, darlings, but in a very good way, you understand!

  • The star of the show was undoubtedly the choreography. A whirlwind of powerful gestures and expressive movement, the choreographer unleashed the inner passion of each dancer, resulting in a performance that left us breathless. It’s raw, it's captivating, it’s absolutely thrilling!
  • The dancers themselves brought a unique intensity to the stage. Their bodies became instruments of expression, conveying a wide spectrum of emotions – desire, lust, frustration, and ultimate despair. They were completely in the moment, captivating us with their raw intensity.
  • While I was quite captivated, I think some will find the “Bolero” an intensely dramatic work, maybe even over the top. But my darlings, for a lover of the arts like myself, it’s a truly unforgettable experience, something that transcends the conventional ballet and evokes emotions with an almost visceral impact.

And then, darlings, there was the South American flair – a true taste of passion that simply had to be experienced.

Santiago: Passion in the Andes

Oh Santiago, you stole my heart. The Chilean Ballet Company presented “El Condor Pasa”, a stunningly evocative dance drama based on the ancient Inca myths and legends. The music, the choreography, and the dancers all blending to capture the dramatic, and sometimes savage, beauty of the Andean culture. A dance experience unlike any other, where every gesture felt like a story waiting to be unfolded.

  • The dancers' energy was infectious! Every jump, every turn felt like a celebration of life itself. There was a real earthiness to their movements, perfectly complemented by the rhythmic, percussive music. It was a dance that truly made one feel connected to the ancestral spirit.
  • The costumes, darling, were a riot of colour! Bright fabrics, woven with intricate patterns, mirrored the vibrant spirit of the Andes. From the flowing skirts of the female dancers to the majestic plumage of the condor, the costumes brought a visual spectacle that complimented the power and elegance of the dance. I must admit I'm feeling quite inspired by the bold use of colour in this piece, shall I incorporate a touch of that vibrancy into my own wardrobe?
  • The choreography told a story. One felt as if witnessing a legend unfold, from the ancient rites to the clash of nature's forces, each movement woven with such deep emotion. The sheer intensity of the story was breathtaking.

One couldn’t resist but feel a touch of regret when leaving this exotic dance experience. Now, as much as I love being swept away by the excitement of the international scene, there is a certain comfort in the familiar. Let’s step into the timeless beauty of the Royal Ballet, darling! The home of the arts – London, darling, London!

London: The Royal Ballet’s "Sleeping Beauty"

Oh my, “Sleeping Beauty”, that classic tale. How I adore the poetry and grace that permeates every movement. And this year, the Royal Ballet has once again brought this beloved story to life with an intimacy and elegance that simply left me breathless.

  • Darcey Bussell’s Aurora, simply divine. Her performance, a masterful blend of tenderness and strength, captivated every eye. One could easily lose oneself in the poetry of her movement, especially in the iconic Rose Adagio, a moment of pure elegance that truly made my heart flutter!
  • The costumes are simply stunning! I do love the timeless charm of Victorian costumes, darling! Those beautiful silks and satins, with intricate details, added a certain magic to the production.
  • "Sleeping Beauty" always leaves one with a sense of wonder. From the ballet’s famous fairy roles, so full of character and playful delights, to the elegant court scenes, every movement is infused with an enchanting charm and grace that's simply impossible to resist. A production that is pure joy!

While we have been indulging in a ballet feast around the globe, darling, I must confess that a certain buzz about an extraordinary performance, an evening where art and dance combine to produce an experience truly unforgettable, has been circling in my world. The world of ballet has crossed over with the avant-garde. This was the highlight of the season. The sheer daring of it! Let me tell you...

New York: Dance and Innovation

It’s not every day one gets to experience an avant-garde production, darling, where dance collides with modern art in a most thrilling way. This, however, was just what happened at the New York City Ballet, who unveiled an innovative performance piece by the revered artist and filmmaker, Michelangelo Antonioni.

  • This is no traditional ballet. There are no tutus or romantic stories. The company's performance was set in the stark modernist architecture of the New York City Center. The stage was bare, stark and austere, but it only served to highlight the raw, expressive energy of the dancers.
  • The dance sequences themselves were highly experimental, almost cinematic. They explored themes of urban isolation, the futility of communication, and the dehumanizing effect of modern life. You can imagine the sheer intellectual impact of it all.
  • It’s an experience that is bound to divide opinion. But, darling, you cannot deny that it challenged traditional ballet in such a captivating way. And let me tell you, nothing gives me greater pleasure than when art stretches its boundaries and pushes them to the edge. It is truly refreshing, isn't it?

It's been an amazing month, darling. But you know me, my calendar is always overflowing with events. And just as this issue is being printed, a certain new ballet production is about to take the stage... One featuring the enigmatic and brilliant choreographer and fashion designer, Viktor & Rolf, with their own captivating take on a very familiar classic.

So, stay tuned, darlings! This is not the end, merely an intermission in a world of art and beauty that promises to leave you breathless. The stage is waiting... And you simply must be there!
