Oh darling, what a whirlwind of tutus and tiaras it’s been! As June unfurls its petals, the ballet world, like a meticulously arranged bouquet, bursts with exquisite blooms, each a dazzling testament to the artistry and dedication of dancers worldwide. I've been flitting about like a hummingbird, sipping nectar from the finest performances, and now, like a fragrant, delicate perfume, I'm ready to share my impressions.
Paris: A Whirlwind of WhimsyMy journey began in the City of Lights, where the ethereal beauty of **Giselle** at the Opéra Garnier left me quite utterly enraptured. A masterpiece of classic romantic ballet, it was an unforgettable experience. The ethereal Marie-Agnès Gillot in the role of the betrayed heroine was divine. She floated like a gossamer dream across the stage, her vulnerability a breathtaking emotional landscape. Her mad scene, a heartbreaking depiction of madness, was hauntingly beautiful. The male lead, Mathieu Ganio, brought a touch of elegant strength to Albrecht, his despair palpable, their tragic pas de deux truly electrifying.
But Paris was not simply about classic grandeur. The young dancers at the Paris Opéra Ballet's **Movements** made a strong impression on this seasoned ballet connoisseur. This vibrant collection of choreographies offered a platform for up-and-coming talent and, dear reader, talent abounds. A bold mix of contemporary and neo-classical works showcased athleticism, innovation, and pure, joyous dance. It’s truly a testament to the next generation of Parisian stars.
New York: The Beat Goes OnFrom the charming boulevards of Paris, I crossed the pond to the dynamic pulse of New York, and I can say the city did not disappoint! I witnessed the vibrant energy of **The New York City Ballet’s Spring Gala**, where artistic director Peter Martins unveiled a delightful programme celebrating the company's illustrious past. The evening was a treasure trove of delightful discoveries - and of course, the always sensational principal dancers, Tiler Peck and Maria Kowroski, stole the show.
Moscow: An Enchanting EncounterFrom the dynamic pulse of New York, I ventured east to the grand tradition of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, where I experienced a sublime production of **La Bayadere**. It was, of course, the divine Natalia Osipova in the role of Nikiya that had me utterly captivated. Her dancing is so wonderfully refined, yet imbued with a youthful fire. It was a treat to watch her flawlessly execute every move, from the dramatic flourishes of the temple scene to the tender melancholy of the ‘Kingdom of the Shades’ scene. This production was the epitome of grand classical ballet – the set, the costumes, the atmosphere – everything, quite simply, stunning!
And then, a small, charming performance in the Kremlin Theatre - an entirely unexpected delight, and one of my most treasured moments of the entire trip! The charming **Ballet Theatre of Russia** treated us to an exhilarating and thoroughly charming **Swan Lake**. A far cry from the opulent grandeur of the Bolshoi production, this production held an endearing charm. I adored the sweetness of Oksana Bondareva’s Odette and Odile - her dancing, delicate and exquisitely executed.
Berlin: The Thrill of the NewAcross Europe I ventured, to the exciting metropolis of Berlin, where I was treated to an incredible showcase of contemporary dance, **Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels**. It was a truly breathtaking celebration of the art form. What an amazing collection of innovative choreography! From the captivating energy of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui to the captivating emotion of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker - each work a stunning display of creativity. It truly pushed the boundaries of classical ballet and proved the art form is forever evolving.
London: Home Sweet HomeAnd finally, home I came, to the vibrant cultural scene of London, and as expected, found so much to rave about. I loved the beautiful new production of **The Sleeping Beauty** at The Royal Ballet, a masterpiece of elegance and theatrical flair. A beautifully staged production, full of the kind of drama that made the ballet what it is - a true fantasy tale, bursting with wonder, magic and, naturally, gorgeous gowns!
As for the dancers themselves, the brilliance of the Royal Ballet simply takes my breath away. I was utterly spellbound by the enchanting Natalia Osipova, radiant as Aurora. It was such a pleasure to witness her grace and precision in the iconic ‘Rose Adagio.’ Likewise, I was equally impressed by the magnetic Steven McRae as Prince Florimund, a dazzling presence. He brought an athleticism and romanticism to the role that is truly rare in these days. His effortless leaps, elegant partnering, and undeniable charisma - quite simply mesmerizing. This new production is destined to become a new classic!
Tokyo: Beyond BeliefOh, darling, let me tell you about **The** **Kabuki Dance of Japan**. A mesmerizing journey into the theatrical tradition of Japan, this incredible dance performance is something quite utterly out of this world. This art form combines incredible storytelling, the beauty of the costumes, a passionate and exquisite form of expression. I was literally swept away. The performers were a force of nature! Their ability to tell a story with the smallest nuance of expression was utterly mesmerising.
Hong Kong: A Dreamy Night in the OrientAfter a little break to refuel on Champagne and caviar, it was off to Hong Kong for the **Hong Kong Ballet's New Season Launch**. The company really did set the bar very high! I was particularly smitten with the new production of **The Great Gatsby**. What an incredible visual treat! The exquisite choreography of Trey McIntyre danced on a set designed to be as glamorous as a 1920s society party.
This ballet company clearly understands that contemporary ballet must engage an audience, and that sometimes the classical just won't do! In the modern context, the choreography must reflect, in some way, what audiences have experienced in their daily lives. The choreographer in this production brought the glitz and glamour of Gatsby's extravagant life onto the stage. From the exquisite dance routines, the opulent costumes to the dramatic storytelling - every aspect was dazzling. It really did show off the incredible skill of the dancers, and brought the whole evening alive with an energy that just kept the adrenaline flowing.
Finally, a Word for You...So, darling, my dears, that is but a glimpse into my June adventures, a delicious swirl of elegance and athleticism. Ballet remains, for me, an art form of exquisite power and beauty, a window to a world where beauty transcends language, where movement speaks volumes, where emotions dance like will-o’-the-wisps through a starry night. So put on your most fetching dress, polish your shoes to a perfect shine, and immerse yourselves in this incredible world of dancing - for truly, it is a magical and glorious place.
