June, 2014 - The Global Ballet Scene: A Season of Enchantment and Exuberance Oh darling, this June has been simply divine for ballet! From the hushed grandeur of the Bolshoi to the vibrant, effervescent energy of the San Francisco Ballet, it’s a season that reminds us why we, the discerning devotees of dance, simply adore this art form. Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow: A "Giselle" that Pierced the Soul I've always believed "Giselle" holds a special place in the hearts of every ballet fan. At the Bolshoi, the story truly comes alive. The Bolshoi's rendition was, for lack of a better word, sensational. Ekaterina Krysanova, the radiant Giselle, possessed a heartbreaking fragility in Act 1, embodying the innocent country girl, before erupting with raw, desperate anguish in Act 2. It was, darling, an absolute tour-de-force! The depth of feeling she conveyed through mere movement left the entire theatre stunned into silence. And then, of course, there's the sheer virtuosity! She, along with the effortlessly elegant Ivan Vasiliev (a prince who oozed charisma, by the way), sent the Bolshoi audience into raptures. Oh, to be swept off my feet like that by a princely dance! Royal Opera House, London: A "Sleeping Beauty" Awakens to Whimsy and Majesty There was an undeniable air of pure magic surrounding "Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House. And don't even get me started on the costumes - all glittering and billowing silk, as befitting the tale's fairy-tale grandeur. The entire production, darling, felt like a delicate dream - whimsical and joyful in equal measure. The ROH's choreography felt perfectly aligned with Tchaikovsky's magical music - it's rare to see a ballet where the performance and the score speak in perfect unison. Marianela Nuñez was every bit the Sleeping Beauty, utterly radiant, yet with an undercurrent of longing that tugged at the heartstrings. And the ensemble, oh, the ensemble! They were like dainty little pixies dancing through the scenery - pure visual enchantment. The San Francisco Ballet: A Contemporary Masterpiece that Had Me Mesmerized San Francisco Ballet's "The Dreamer," choreographed by Helgi Tomasson, is, I must say, the most captivating and intriguing ballet I’ve seen in ages. It's a testament to how contemporary ballet can weave such deeply personal, even spiritual stories, and the company, darling, they just ate it up. There were daring feats of athleticism, some beautiful passages of fluid grace, and the dancers? Well, they truly channeled the dreamscape of the piece, creating a truly haunting and emotional experience. A Tour De Force in Tokyo: The Ballet-Lover's Dream I was recently in Tokyo for the "Ballet Gala" at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Hall - what an extravaganza, my dears! A captivating blend of classic and contemporary. There was the stunning Svetlana Zakharova (I absolutely adored her as Odette in "Swan Lake") in a piece called "Black and White" - an incredibly nuanced portrayal of emotions, truly hypnotic. And let's not forget the sublime "Le Corsaire," an absolute triumph for the Japanese troupe! A delicious feast of technical brilliance and grand romanticism. And the costumes, dear, oh the costumes! So lavish, so theatrical, it’s no wonder this entire performance made my heart sing. Other Notable Encounters in the World of Ballet - Paris Opera Ballet's "The Nutcracker": Simply enchanting. The sheer scale of it, darling, it was utterly magical. The Christmas spectacle came alive with opulent sets, dazzling costumes, and of course, Tchaikovsky's exquisite score - every single performance just a delight for the eyes and ears! - American Ballet Theatre's "The Lady of the Camellias": So achingly beautiful. The emotion, the drama, the utter heartbreak - this masterpiece of romanticism tugged at my soul. I'm not sure how they do it, but ABT always manages to make each story feel fresh, timeless, and eternally poignant. - Dutch National Ballet's "The Four Seasons": Oh my! This one, dear, had such incredible energy, a burst of pure joyous life, it had me grinning ear to ear. A stunning and unexpected rendition of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," perfectly executed, with such a palpable, uplifting rhythm - it left you invigorated, just as you'd want to be after watching the very best ballet! And of course, let's not forget those exceptional independent companies and schools. It was an absolute joy to see the future of dance on stage: - The English National Ballet’s "Sleeping Beauty" brought an unpolished but sincere vibrancy, a glimpse of passionate talent in the making. - The Royal Ballet School’s annual showcase showcased such incredible technical virtuosity, with several performers who, if all goes well, might one day grace the Royal Opera House stage themselves. This has been such a breathtaking month for ballet, darlings. As a lover of dance, my heart swells with joy. Seeing so much brilliance, so much creativity, on stage simply reminds us of the transformative power of this art form - a power to enchant, to uplift, and yes, to make the world a slightly more magical place, one graceful step at a time.
