Ballet Under a Summer Sky: A Global Tour in August
Darling, August has been a simply divine month for ballet. The summer heat has not dampened our passion for twirls and leaps, as companies worldwide continue to delight and surprise. From the grand stages of Europe to the intimate theaters of America, a whirlwind of exquisite artistry has left me breathless and, frankly, utterly spoilt for choice.
**London’s Dance Delights**
Let’s begin our tour with dear old London, where the Royal Ballet at Covent Garden, as ever, leads the way. Their current program is a delicious blend of classic and contemporary. The revival of MacMillan's “Manon” has proven to be utterly captivating. It's a work of incredible power and sensuality, with the iconic “Dream” sequence executed with the most breathtaking grace. And darling, have you seen Natalia Osipova in the lead? She’s simply incandescent, the embodiment of the tragically beautiful Manon, her every gesture conveying an emotional depth that’s quite breathtaking.
Meanwhile, the Royal Ballet’s own Wayne McGregor continues to push boundaries with “Carbon Life” – a work that is daring and undeniably modern, and, as always with Wayne, pushes the dancers to the limits of their physical capabilities. However, dear reader, it’s not always my cup of tea. A little more artistry, and a little less contemporary chaos, would have been greatly appreciated.
Across the river at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, we have a double delight with “Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels.” This exquisite production is a delightful, and surprisingly sophisticated, mix of exquisite ballets from a myriad of dance companies from around the world. You have the chance to see a range of styles, from the delicate beauty of a Japanese troupe to the athleticism of the Paris Opera Ballet. Simply put, it’s a ballet bonanza and a must for anyone who loves the sheer beauty and artistry of this art form. The costume designs, featuring jewels, have got to be seen to be believed – darling, I simply adored them.
**A European Whirlwind**
From London, let's jet over to Paris. Oh, darling, the Palais Garnier - it’s simply glorious. The Opéra de Paris has had a particularly vibrant summer, with several outstanding productions. Their revival of “La Bayadère” was truly spectacular, showcasing a truly spectacular cast led by the brilliant, and very striking, Aurélie Dupont. The sheer artistry and technical virtuosity were just dazzling. And, my darling, that iconic "Kingdom of the Shades" scene? Absolutely breathtaking. I’m sure my own reflection was reflected back in the polished floorboards as I watched in awe.
Next, darling, a trip to Rome, where Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is presenting a fascinating mix of ballet and opera. The staging is a beautiful thing, and there’s a great deal of spectacle in all that they produce, especially when it comes to costumes, but I'm more inclined to enjoy the lighter, ballet side. For a night of real entertainment, this is your place.
But oh, darling, it’s Vienna where my heart truly feels at home. The Wiener Staatsballett never disappoints and, in a summer full of glorious productions, one performance that sticks out like a star is "Giselle." A masterpiece performed by an incredible cast. With its hauntingly beautiful choreography and poignant tale, “Giselle” always leaves me utterly spellbound.
**The Allure of the New World**
Finally, let’s journey across the Atlantic to the US, where, oh darling, ballet is thriving, although not quite in the style we find across Europe.
The New York City Ballet has returned to Lincoln Center for its annual summer season and, with it, a renewed sense of artistic energy. "The Sleeping Beauty" is a beautiful classic and never fails to delight, with dancers at the top of their game, but darling, it's not all classical perfection. There is also an incredible display of modern talent with the company’s acclaimed resident choreographer Justin Peck. His work is a mix of experimental and bold - very ‘American’, wouldn't you say?
And we must not forget our beloved Boston Ballet. They've brought "Don Quixote" back to their stage. It's full of color, energy, and captivating charm – a sheer delight! You may think this a little predictable but, oh darling, ballet, sometimes, should be all about predictable delight.
A Farewell Bow
So, darling, August has been a simply splendid month for ballet lovers like us. With countless companies around the globe presenting breathtaking performances, the art form continues to captivate our hearts and inspire our dreams. Here's to another dazzling month, and another whirlwind tour of the most beautiful art form of all. And remember, my darlings, if there’s ever a need to escape from the world and delve into a world of grace, beauty, and magic, ballet will always be there to whisk you away!
