August 2016: A Month of Exquisite Delights
Darling, the summer season has been positively intoxicating! I've been flitting from stage to stage, sipping champagne, and soaking in the sheer brilliance of dance around the world. This month, I've had the pleasure of witnessing everything from the exquisitely nuanced to the dramatically over-the-top, each performance leaving me utterly enthralled.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Vienna
Let's start in Vienna, where the Staatsoper brought Shakespeare's beloved "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to life with such ethereal charm. It was almost as if Puck, Oberon, and Titania had personally sprinkled their magical dust upon the stage. The choreography by Alexei Ratmansky was absolutely enchanting – a playful blend of classical and contemporary movement, perfectly reflecting the mischievous whimsy of the play. The dancers themselves were simply divine, particularly the radiant étoile, Olga Esina, who infused her portrayal of Titania with both regal grace and feminine warmth. Her duet with the exquisite Joseph Unger as Oberon was truly breathtaking. The production, with its stunningly imaginative costumes and whimsical set design, was like stepping into a whimsical dream.
Bolshoi Back to Their Best in Moscow
My trip to Moscow wouldn't be complete without a visit to the iconic Bolshoi Theatre. This month, I was fortunate to see a truly captivating revival of "Giselle," featuring a truly iconic performance from the luminous Natalia Osipova. I've always loved the depth and vulnerability she brings to the character of Giselle, and in this production, she simply outdid herself. Her partner, the strong and handsome David Hallberg, perfectly embodied the noble and loyal Albrecht, their pas de deux moments of sublime beauty, a perfect blend of athleticism and lyrical emotion. The ensemble scenes, full of haunting, ethereal movements, painted a powerful picture of the tragic story's heartbreak.
Royal Ballet's ‘Manon’ in London
Back in London, the Royal Ballet's "Manon" held me utterly spellbound. I must confess, this is a production that consistently brings me to the brink of tears. The choreography by Kenneth MacMillan is so tragically poignant, each gesture so telling, the entire production feels so desperately alive! I was utterly transfixed by the exceptional dancing of Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov. Their passionate performance ignited the stage, leaving a powerful mark long after the final curtain fell.
Parisian Opulence at the Opera Garnier
Now, who could resist a night at the opulent Opera Garnier in Paris? The stage design alone was enough to leave me speechless! The ballet was no disappointment either! The company’s performance of "Swan Lake" showcased some of the most exquisite, graceful, and technical ballet I've ever seen. Their seamless transition from swan to human, their delicate pirouettes, and perfectly executed fouettés left me spellbound. I simply can’t help but admire the skill and discipline required for such a demanding and breathtaking production.
American Neo-Classical Wonder in New York
Finally, across the pond, New York City Ballet continued to impress with its exquisite neo-classical productions. This month, they unveiled a captivating new work by Justin Peck. This brilliant choreographer consistently redefines ballet's boundaries, infusing contemporary influences into a classic idiom, resulting in fresh and deeply emotional works. His choreography embraced bold movements and an incredible athleticism that I, frankly, found quite exhilarating. This work showcased a blend of elegant grace and raw power, reflecting a kind of modern romanticism.
Across the World, Ballet Blossoms
This truly has been a month of balletic marvels. I was enthralled by a passionate production of “Carmen" in Madrid, completely captivated by "La Bayadère" at the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg, and swept away by the exquisite "Sleeping Beauty" by the San Francisco Ballet. Each performance left its unique stamp on my soul.
Beyond the Stage
As you can tell, dear readers, the world of ballet has become an even more fascinating tapestry. From traditional to experimental, from dazzling costumes to thought-provoking choreography, it's a realm of boundless imagination.
And beyond the stage, a new world of fashion is blooming in the ballet world. From the extravagant tulle gowns of Vienna to the striking minimalist lines in New York, ballet is now a muse for the fashion world. Look out for this intriguing trend!
Now, if you'll excuse me, darling, there are a few more performances to catch, but trust me, I'll share the absolute gems with you. I simply cannot resist bringing you the latest from the glamorous world of ballet. And of course, the delectable whispers from behind the velvet ropes. Stay tuned, darlings. We'll be flitting to the next grand opening in no time!
