Ballet Bohemia: A Global December in Review

Darlings, December has been a whirlwind of tulle and tiaras! From the glittering grandeur of the Bolshoi to the intimate charm of the Paris Opéra, this month has been a true testament to the global reach and enduring power of ballet.

Moscow's Majestic: Bolshoi's "Giselle"

Let's begin where all great ballet journeys do: Moscow. The Bolshoi Theatre is the ultimate cathedral of ballet, and December saw them grace us with a truly breathtaking production of "Giselle." The immaculate, classic choreography of the first act, perfectly executed by Svetlana Zakharova, sent chills down my spine. Her portrayal of Giselle was a delicate balance of vulnerability and strength - pure perfection! Then the second act! The "Wilis" were simply mesmerising, their movements ghostly, haunting, and oh-so-chillingly beautiful. The costumes were simply divine: Romantic and ethereal, showcasing the masterful craftsmanship of the Bolshoi's ateliers. One thing's for sure: This production is a must-see for any true ballet aficionado.

Parisian Panache: A New "Cinderella" at the Opéra

From the red squares of Moscow to the charming cobblestone streets of Paris, I dashed across Europe, next stopping at the Paris Opéra. There, the Palais Garnier played host to a glittering new production of "Cinderella". This version was less a classic and more a modern fairytale, with playful costumes that had more than a dash of Versace and an exhilarating, almost theatrical score that pushed the boundaries of traditional ballet music. This modern interpretation wasn't to everyone's taste, but I applaud their boldness and ingenuity! Marie-AgnÚs Gillot gave a spirited performance, her delicate form bringing a sweet yet fierce edge to Cinderella's role. A bold, bold take, and one I won't soon forget.

New York's Neon Dreams: "The Nutcracker" Gets a Makeover

The City That Never Sleeps took the festive season to another level with the New York City Ballet's "The Nutcracker." While the company famously presents a lavish, traditional version, a new rendition, designed by renowned artist Yayoi Kusama, graced the stage at the David H. Koch Theater. Kusama's distinct artistic language - hallmarks being bright, polka-dotted creations – was truly captivating. The entire stage became an explosion of color and form, making the familiar scenes both dazzling and disorienting. A risky, and utterly magnificent choice, I'd say! Of course, Tiler Peck as the Sugar Plum Fairy stole the show, her precise movements and effortless grace, making me want to just scream “Bravo!”

London's Luminous Ballet: The Royal's "Swan Lake"

No trip to Europe's ballet circuit is complete without a stop in London. And what better place than The Royal Opera House to watch the most enduring, beloved story of them all? Their production of "Swan Lake" is a true classic for a reason. Every performance has this ethereal elegance. Marianela NĂșñez and Vadim Muntagirov as Odette and Siegfried danced beautifully, a harmonious and compelling duo who had me absolutely transfixed by their movements. But it was the swan costumes that truly wowed! Each detail – the feathering, the shimmering silks – evoked the captivating transformation of the noble swan into a beautiful princess. Truly spectacular!

From the West Coast to the Orient: A Glimpse of Global Dance

I can't let you, dear readers, believe that ballet only resides in the famed European cities. I was lucky enough to catch two dazzling productions elsewhere:

  • San Francisco's Ballet "Alice in Wonderland": San Francisco Ballet put on a whimsical take on "Alice in Wonderland." I absolutely adore this kind of unconventional ballets - one with a truly playful energy! A dynamic, creative approach with dazzling costume designs, it's what I live for!
  • The Shanghai Ballet: In a stunning show of contemporary artistry, I was entranced by The Shanghai Ballet's performance of a piece called "Shēng Ming." This contemporary piece was an ethereal, introspective spectacle of movements. It’s a beautiful testament to the growing force of Asian ballet scene!

More than Just Performances: Ballet's Expanding Influence

The global stage, however, isn’t confined to traditional theatre spaces. Ballet's influence is everywhere, a true artistic force to be reckoned with! A few recent highlights that made my heart skip a beat:

  • Ballet Meets Fashion: I’ve always had a penchant for both dance and fashion, so you can only imagine my joy at witnessing the incredible Valentino Haute Couture show, inspired by ballet. Models walked down the runway as living works of art, and I can't tell you how absolutely ecstatic I was to see ballet-inspired movement integrated into a fashion show at this level of sophistication.
  • The Art of the Ballet Film: "The White Crow," a film about the legendary Rudolf Nureyev, was released this month. Though the movie was a mixed bag for critics, the artistry behind the film’s dancing sequences is undeniably stunning! And then there’s “First Position,” a captivating documentary showcasing young dancers, which offered a glimpse into the discipline and dedication behind every “en pointe” step! The sheer beauty of dance in these cinematic interpretations was a breath of fresh air.

This December has proved that the allure of ballet is truly universal. The costumes, the music, the talent - each element combines to create an unparalleled artistic experience. These breathtaking performances have been a delight and an absolute inspiration.

I simply can't wait to see what artistic masterpieces the New Year brings. Let's raise our glasses of Champagne and toast to the magnificent world of ballet!
