Darling readers, Welcome back to another scintillating month of dance and spectacle, where the world’s leading ballerinas and their beguiling partners are once again taking to the stage. This December sees an enchanting mix of classic masterpieces, innovative contemporary works, and festive, glittering celebrations, guaranteed to dazzle and delight even the most jaded dance devotee.
The Royal Ballet: A Night of Magic and Majesty
As a seasoned ballet enthusiast, one knows that December in London is simply not complete without a pilgrimage to Covent Garden to witness the spectacle that is The Royal Ballet's annual Christmas performance. This year, we were treated to a breathtaking production of The Nutcracker. A classic fairytale that never fails to enthral, The Nutcracker, under Christopher Wheeldon’s charming direction, felt exquisitely refreshed and oh-so-stylishly current, and was an absolute triumph. The beautiful and ethereal Marianela Nuñez stole the show as Clara, and the company’s renowned corps de ballet were, as ever, breathtaking in their impeccable technique and unified beauty. Of course, darling, it is a production absolutely not to be missed!
Parisian Chic and Contemporary Finesse: A Triptych of Excellence
On the continent, Parisian audiences were treated to a veritable ballet extravaganza at the Palais Garnier, a captivating trilogy of contrasting pieces. First, we witnessed the impeccable Parisian company of the Paris Opera Ballet perform an ethereal rendition of George Balanchine’s Symphony in C. This masterful ballet showcases the pure beauty of neoclassical form and the virtuosity of the dancers in a sublime manner. It was pure poetry in motion and an exquisite beginning to the evening. The next piece was truly avant-garde, a truly enthralling contemporary creation from the ever-provocative choreographer, Benjamin Millepied. It was not for the faint of heart but absolutely mesmerising. The last offering of the evening was a breathtaking reimagining of Marius Petipa's iconic La Bayadère, complete with jaw-droppingly dazzling costumes, a sweeping, romantic score, and an extraordinary corps de ballet who seemed to fly across the stage. I assure you, it was an absolute feast for the senses, the perfect encapsulation of Parisian flair and the ultimate celebration of dance.
The Bolshoi Ballet: A Fiery Affair in Moscow
Across the Iron Curtain in Moscow, the legendary Bolshoi Ballet unveiled a sensational new production of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. This iconic love story has captivated audiences for centuries, but the Bolshoi’s fiery interpretation infused this enduring tale with a thrilling new energy. The performances by the company’s star dancers, Olga Smirnova and Vladislav Lantratov, were particularly mesmerising. They showcased their unmatched technique and deep emotional connection with a passion that was both explosive and utterly breathtaking. My dearest readers, be sure to make it to the Bolshoi if you possibly can, it is the most sensational rendition of Romeo and Juliet you are likely to encounter! The whole production felt like a blazing love affair. Truly decadent and inspiring.
New York, New York: Bold Statements and Choreographic Brilliance
Moving across the Atlantic to the Big Apple, the New York City Ballet proved yet again why it is one of the most exciting and innovative companies in the world. I went to see the dazzling opening of their Fall season, featuring a triple bill that included a new piece by the up-and-coming choreographer Justin Peck. Darling, his work is quite extraordinary - edgy and dynamic and undeniably compelling. The rest of the program showcased classic pieces by Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine, but this contemporary new work was definitely the star of the show.
Festivals, Fêtes and Festive Dance Delights
And of course, December is a season of festive celebrations. From the sparkling lights of the Royal Opera House Christmas Gala to the joyous celebrations of the Nutcracker in countless theatres around the globe, the festive season is alive with the magic of dance. But darling, if you really want a spectacle of the season, I’d implore you to make the trip to the famous Dance Gala of the Hermitage Museum, held every year in December in St. Petersburg. Now there’s a reason for travelling. Imagine ballet in an art gallery - it’s divine.
And Finally, A Touch of Holiday Cheer…
Darling, in this world of grand premieres and illustrious venues, it's also delightful to note the smaller, intimate triumphs of dance. A community Christmas show in a village hall, a charity gala at a local theatre – all are joyous reminders of the unifying power of dance.
As the year draws to a close, it is wonderful to see how dance continues to evolve and enchant. From the grandest stages to the smallest studios, its power to move us, to inspire us, and to bring us together remains ever-present.
Until next month, dear readers, happy holidays and a wonderful New Year filled with magical dance!
Your ballet devotee,
Miss D.
