August Ballet Buzz: From London to Lausanne, a Global Whirl of Grace

Dearest dance devotees, as August unfurls its languid, sun-drenched days, the ballet world continues its frenetic spin, leaving a trail of shimmering tutus and breathtaking pirouettes across the globe. From the hallowed halls of Covent Garden to the vibrant stages of Lausanne, this month has been a symphony of talent, each performance a captivating tapestry woven with passion, precision, and the pure magic of movement.

Royal Ballet, Covent Garden: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Let's begin our journey in the heart of London, where the Royal Ballet, like a stately English rose, continues to bloom with both tradition and innovation. Their recent revival of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" was a whimsical delight, a kaleidoscopic blend of Mendelssohn's enchanting score and Frederick Ashton's timeless choreography. The dream-like atmosphere was conjured by the shimmering costumes, an explosion of vibrant colour against the lush, moonlit backdrop. The ethereal elegance of Marianela NuĂąez as Titania and the mischievous energy of Matthew Golding as Puck made for a perfect match of passion and precision.

However, a particular highlight of the production was the effortless power of Reece Clarke as Oberon. His every movement was a potent cocktail of strength and fluidity, showcasing an athleticism that truly commands attention. Reece embodies the very essence of masculinity in its purest form, a perfect balance of grace and force, a compelling testament to the evolving, multi-dimensional nature of ballet. And who could resist the mischievous glint in his eyes?

Royal Opera House, London: "The Winter's Tale"

Staying in the heart of Covent Garden, we shift gears to a more poignant tale with the Royal Opera House's revival of "The Winter's Tale". This production, with choreography by Christopher Wheeldon, was a masterful tapestry of human emotion, showcasing the poignant beauty of the Shakespearean story. Wheeldon's masterful direction beautifully reflected the raw, unfiltered vulnerability of human nature, woven through the dance of the company.

The strength of this production truly lay in its ensemble. The intricate and nuanced movement felt incredibly organic, making it feel as if each dancer was living and breathing the story. The beautiful dance between Leanne Cope as Hermione and Vadim Muntagirov as Leontes captivated, while the comedic talents of Joseph Sissens as Autolycus kept the energy delightfully light.

La Scala, Milan: "Sleeping Beauty"

We cross the English Channel to Italy where Milan’s iconic La Scala, that majestic architectural gem, staged a glittering "Sleeping Beauty". This production, a ballet of dazzling visuals, highlighted the technique and elegance of La Scala's talented dancers. The opulent costumes and sets created an enchanted forest, a magical setting for a classic fairytale ballet.

However, it was the graceful ballerina, Martina Arduino, as Aurora who truly stole the show. She possessed a regal aura and exquisite poise that captivated from the first steps. Every move was a masterpiece of delicate precision and strength. This "Sleeping Beauty" was truly a delight for the senses.

Bolshoi Ballet, Moscow: "Romeo and Juliet"

From the grand stages of Milan we move east to Moscow. The Bolshoi, renowned for its explosive athleticism and deeply emotional storytelling, brought their legendary “Romeo and Juliet” back to life. It’s hard to describe this ballet, it's an emotional journey in a world of sublime artistry. This ballet doesn’t simply entertain, it pulls the audience in, forcing you to relive their tumultuous love story with them.

In particular, Svetlana Zakharova’s Juliet is a standout. This Juliet embodies vulnerability, power and a deep, unyielding love for Romeo. You cannot take your eyes off her, her movements and the way she interacts with the stage. We all marvel at Zakharova, her powerful presence leaves you stunned at the end. And let's not forget the intense drama and impeccable precision of Alexander Volchkov as Romeo. They truly bring this classic love story to life, igniting the theatre with a raw, powerful emotional energy that’s captivating.

Ballett Zürich, Zurich: “La Bayadere”

The Swiss city of Zurich was no less captivating. Their vibrant production of "La Bayadere", with its dazzling exotic costumes and its iconic "Kingdom of the Shades" sequence was a breathtaking spectacle. Ballett Zürich’s version was truly mesmerizing. I am captivated by the delicate yet powerful work of the female corps de ballet. The effortless precision of their every movement in the "Kingdom of the Shades" scene made this one of the most magical moments I've experienced at the theatre. The production, overall, is a shining example of a classical ballet masterpiece brought to life with energy, emotion, and masterful precision.

Lausanne Ballet: “Giselle”

Our journey through the ballet world ends with a visit to Lausanne, Switzerland, where their ballet continues to weave magic. The Lausanne Ballet’s rendition of “Giselle”, a ballet of love and loss, featured both the ethereal beauty of Giselle’s romantic vision, as well as the fierce beauty of the Wilis, those mystical and vengeful forest spirits.

The production showcased some extraordinary talents: the poignant sorrow in Marie-Agnès Gillot’s portrayal of Giselle and the fierce power in the pas de deux with Davit Motlab as Hilarion, was a testament to the exceptional dance of the Lausanne Ballet.

And More

And while we may have reached the end of our dance tour, the ballet world’s dance journey continues on through the rest of August and beyond. From the captivating dancers of the American Ballet Theatre, to the grace of the Royal Danish Ballet, and all the smaller companies across the globe, each performance weaves a thread into the fabric of this magnificent art form. Let's not forget that ballet continues to push boundaries, constantly evolving and inspiring.

Be sure to catch some dazzling performances in your town or city, it may surprise you with it’s power to move, inspire, and bring us all closer. As for us, we will continue to follow this dance trail, always eager to embrace the grace, power and passion of this art.
