This month, I find myself journeying from the opulent grandeur of Paris to the vibrant energy of Tokyo, with pit stops along the way to savour the exquisite artistry of Russia, America, and closer to home, in our very own London.
**Paris: A Triumph of Romance and Beauty**
The City of Lights is never short on glamour, and this month the Opéra Garnier delivered yet another exquisite spectacle with their production of **Giselle**. As a balletomane, I can confidently declare that **Giselle** is a timeless masterpiece, and this production was a tour-de-force, truly capturing the raw passion and tragic beauty of the tale. From the ethereal pas de deux between the ethereal Giselle, gracefully embodied by the luminous **Aurélie Dupont** , and the debonair Albrecht, impeccably danced by **Guillaume de Vigan**, to the poignant and spine-tingling fury of the Wilis – it was an emotional roller-coaster ride that I savored every second of.
**New York: Contemporary Ballet and the Quest for Authenticity**
Over the pond, in the ever-thriving ballet scene of New York, I found myself captivated by a daringly different approach to ballet. At the New York City Ballet, the company, under the direction of the legendary **Justin Peck**, presented a triple-bill program showcasing the best of contemporary ballet. The highlights were undeniably **Peck**'s own **"The Times Are Racing"** and **"Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes."** Both pieces were masterclasses in choreographic innovation and dramatic storytelling, leaving the audience entranced by the intensity and raw beauty of the dancing. **Tiler Peck**, as ever, was electrifying in **"Rodeo,"** demonstrating a powerful fusion of athleticism and artistry. It was a vibrant reminder that ballet can be both cutting-edge and profoundly moving.
**Tokyo: Japanese Ballet Meets Modern Flair**
And, onward to the Far East, where I had the distinct pleasure of witnessing a unique blend of tradition and innovation in Tokyo. The **Tokyo Ballet** presented a dazzling production of **Swan Lake**, drawing me in with the company's meticulous attention to classical technique and their undeniable charisma. However, what truly impressed me was the refreshing interpretive twist the choreographers brought to the well-loved work. I loved the company's unique approaches to the famous "Black Swan" variation and the powerful presence of the principal dancer, **Mika Kanda**, who embodied both the grace and decisiveness of Odette and Odile with rare skill.
**Moscow: Tradition and Power At Its Finest**
From Tokyo, I embarked on a brief journey to Moscow, where the Bolshoi Theatre never fails to impress. This month, I witnessed a truly captivating performance of **The Nutcracker.** I can't overstate the emotional depth and sheer technical brilliance that the Bolshoi's dancers bring to every performance. The production itself was breathtaking: the costumes, the sets, even the lighting – every detail felt extravagant yet exquisitely balanced.
London: The Royal Ballet and Its Stellar Roster
Finally, I'm back in the heart of London, and what a delightful treat awaits. The Royal Ballet, at Covent Garden, never ceases to inspire with its incredible repertoire and, of course, its superstar dancers. This month, they presented a breathtaking performance of **Sleeping Beauty**, a ballet I admittedly find myself revisiting often! The talented **Marianela Nuñez** was enchanting as the sleeping princess Aurora, possessing that perfect balance of regal deportment and endearing vulnerability. **Vaughan Emery** , her princely partner, was simply dashing.
But the highlight for me, this time, was the production of **The Winter's Tale**, a collaboration between the company and renowned contemporary choreographer **Wayne McGregor**. This was an unexpected jewel in the crown! This ballet, a modern reimagining of Shakespeare's famous work, was an explosion of creativity that left the audience in awestruck silence. **McGregor**’s masterful use of light, space, and a striking, minimalist score made for an unforgettable balletic experience.
I must, of course, pay homage to our dear **Royal Opera House**, whose contribution to the ballet world extends beyond the extraordinary performances themselves. This month, they presented a stunning exhibition, “The Art of Dance”, dedicated to the long and illustrious history of ballet. The exhibition featured an incredible collection of historical photographs, rare posters, and costumes, providing a fascinating glimpse into the world of ballet and its transformation through the centuries.
