My dears, February has flown by in a whirl of tutus and tiaras, and what a fabulous month it has been for ballet! Weâve had dazzling debuts, triumphant returns, and some gloriously unexpected twists. I must say, it seems the ballet world is in rare form this season, and I am absolutely besotted by all of it!
Royal Ballet, Covent Garden: A Case for ClassicismThe Royal Ballet, always a stalwart of the classical repertoire, has truly outdone themselves this month with a stellar run of Giselle. It was simply divine! Darling Natalia Osipova was, of course, sublime. Her interpretation was exquisite, filled with an aching pathos and a captivating vulnerability that made one weep for her tragic fate. And her partner, the glorious Steven McRae, was positively incandescent as Albrecht. Their chemistry was electric, their partnering masterful, and their every gesture oozed with a romantic intensity that simply left you breathless.
This revival also brought forth a delightful new Giselle in the talented, delicate Fumi Kaneko, and she is definitely one to watch for the future. There were also some notable performances from the corps de ballet, especially in the final Act. They were both exquisitely graceful and terrifyingly dramatic. The sheer artistry and technical prowess on display were, in a word, superb. It reminded me why this company holds such a cherished position in the world of dance. Bravo, Covent Garden, bravo!
Dutch National Ballet: Delicate PowerI then dashed off to Amsterdam, and oh my, was it worth the journey! The Dutch National Ballet, under the leadership of Ted Brandsen, has a unique, distinctive style that is both incredibly elegant and, dare I say, wonderfully avant-garde. They are pushing boundaries and re-inventing tradition, which I simply adore! I saw their production of Wayne McGregorâs "Chroma" â now that was an experience! The piece was as bold as it was breathtaking, with dynamic, ever-changing choreography that made the dancers seem like moving sculptures. McGregor is such a brilliant innovator, and it's fascinating how he blends classical form with cutting-edge, contemporary moves. The use of light was particularly captivating, throwing the dancers in sharp, dazzling relief, creating a visual spectacle unlike any other.
But, let's not forget the dancing! I was struck by the remarkable power and athleticism of the company. They flew, leapt, and turned with an explosive energy that had the audience gasping in awe. I particularly admired the dynamic performances of Daniel Camargo and Victor Caixeta. These young men are clearly stars in the making! âChromaâ is a thrilling ride of energy, elegance, and pure theatrical magic, and if you ever have the opportunity to see it, grab a ticket. You wonât be disappointed, darlings.
A Royal Gala at the Mariinsky: An Affair of EleganceNow, on to St. Petersburg, home to the iconic Mariinsky Ballet! There, amidst the plush velvet of the theatre, I was transported back to the golden age of ballet with their Gala event featuring a dazzling array of their principal stars. We saw snippets from "Swan Lake" and "Don Quixote", the pure elegance and virtuosity of these classics shining through in every gesture. Each dance, every pause, and every pirouette was impeccably crafted. And let's not forget the gorgeous costumes!
The gala also showcased the Mariinsky's stunning young talent. Viktoria Tereshkina's luminous beauty and exquisite grace shone in a pas de deux from "La Bayadère." Her partner, Xander Parish, was her perfect foil, his dancing brimming with athleticism and emotional depth. I truly do believe that the Mariinsky is nurturing the next generation of dance legends! Their Gala was simply a dazzling reminder of their legacy of brilliance. It left me filled with awe and sheer, blissful wonder.
Londonâs Newcomers: A Bright FutureBack in London, the ballet world continues to bloom. The English National Ballet's "The Nutcracker" was an enchanting spectacle, filled with whimsy, colour, and festive spirit. While their interpretation is quite traditional, what shone brightly was their young ensemble. The talent within this company is simply exceptional, and their rendition of the sugarplum fairies was a real delight. This new generation is both captivating and highly skilled! They made a very strong case for their future prospects!
Then, there was the little-known Rambert Dance Company. These talented dancers, a breath of fresh air, are a contemporary dance company. They truly stole my heart with their recent show, âA World of Dreams.â It's a deeply personal exploration of emotions through movement. Rambert was so honest and vulnerable. They really dared to lay themselves bare. It was truly an exceptional showcase for this company. The use of spoken word was also clever and unexpected. If you want a new perspective on contemporary ballet, make sure to check out this innovative troupe.
Around the World, A Global CelebrationAnd then we move beyond Europe! The Sydney Dance Company in Australia has had a spectacular year. Their recent piece, "Invisible Cities" was both visually striking and emotionally powerful. It explores themes of urban decay, humanity, and resilience, themes that we can all connect to, regardless of our geographical location. The piece felt as much an ode to the human condition as a love letter to the dynamic energy of their city.
The National Ballet of Canada is a true gem, my dears, with a reputation for classical ballet at its finest. The world premiere of "The Sleeping Beauty" with Principal dancer Chan Hon Goh is definitely worth a journey. Gohâs effortless beauty, strength, and technical prowess shine. There is such heart and beauty in the entire piece. Goh's interpretation is utterly captivating, truly a celebration of this classic tale. I'm positively delighted with her interpretation, and with her! Her commitment to excellence and technical virtuosity is, dare I say, astounding! The National Ballet of Canada is in excellent form and they have clearly established a firm reputation for world-class ballets, performed with such stunning precision.
From the Pages to the Stage: Ballet Adapts the Literary ClassicsI am thrilled to see ballet dipping its toes into the world of literary adaptation. It's so refreshing to see our beloved stories interpreted through the language of dance. "Pride and Prejudice" was given an entirely new life by English National Ballet, a unique and playful dance-drama that truly captured the witty social commentary and delicate romance of the novel. This innovative production truly captivated the audience, reminding them of how relevant Jane Austen's social satire is even today! They transformed the world of drawing rooms, balls, and country estates into a world of movement. This piece proves the power of dance as a language for exploring literature. Such ingenuity is to be commended.
Ballet Takes the Stage: Theatre & Dance, A Wonderful FusionThe world of ballet has become truly multi-faceted in recent years, pushing beyond the traditional constraints of stage productions and into the realms of multimedia experiences. Ballet in film and opera collaborations are particularly exciting! And the "Le Sacre du Printemps" production, directed by the remarkable film director T. S. Eliot (who else!) is simply masterful! Combining the stunning and distinctive power of Stravinskyâs composition with the haunting beauty of Eliot's cinematography made it a stunning experience.
The recent revival of "Romeo and Juliet" with the collaboration between the San Francisco Opera and the Ballet Russe has captured a distinct and poignant power. They combined the lyrical beauty of the opera's score with the sweeping movements of ballet, creating a story filled with emotional depth.
These ambitious collaborations serve as a reminder that the art form is forever evolving, and I, for one, am deeply impressed by this artistic innovation and bold artistic fusion.
My dear readers, these are just some of the highlights of what has been a simply spectacular month for ballet! Itâs truly inspiring to witness such brilliance and creative energy in the ballet world. From classical to contemporary, the stage is alive with a diverse range of talents, all striving to capture the beauty of movement and the magic of storytelling. Do take the opportunity to discover your own favourites, my darlings. Let us embrace the ever-changing and fascinating world of ballet. It's certainly a journey we should all cherish!
