November, darling, is truly the month where the world’s ballets start to blossom. After the summer lull and those delicious post-festival naps, it seems like all the leading companies and the brightest talents have burst forth from their creative chrysalises and are finally ready to enchant.
Now, I won’t lie, my November was an absolute whirlwind, whisking me between glamorous gala evenings, opulent opera houses and intimate studio spaces. I was flitting between continents as fast as a tutu twirls - and it's simply the most invigorating and inspiring way to live, my dears!
Here, I give you the first juicy bites of my latest ballet adventures:
New York City Ballet - Serenade and Symphony in C, New York City. The very air in the hallowed halls of the New York State Theater felt electric as the City Ballet took to the stage for their Fall Gala, and dear, these dancers didn’t disappoint! Balanchine’s masterpieces are always a feast, a delicious dance-dessert for the discerning ballet lover.
First, we had the sublime, luminous Serenade. I truly can’t describe the exquisite artistry of this work; every movement speaks to a longing, to an idealized and tender love story. And the dancers - oh my - were breathtaking in their ability to express such profound emotions with effortless elegance.
And then, the sheer vibrancy of Symphony in C! The joyous bursts of color and the exhilarating pace reminded me of the youthful thrill of first discovering the pure magic of ballet.
Royal Ballet - Romeo and Juliet, Royal Opera House, LondonNow, there is no ballet more evocative and romantic than Romeo and Juliet. Every time I witness its tragic unfolding, my heart simply melts! The Royal Ballet’s rendition was absolutely heartbreaking, with its achingly beautiful costumes and lighting that beautifully emphasized the emotions on stage.
I adored the raw, tempestuous performance of Edward Watson, a true veteran, and the graceful beauty of Yasmine Naghdi, who captured Juliet’s sweet innocence with heartbreaking perfection. If you’ve never seen this classic, darling, it's truly a must.
Paris Opera Ballet - Le Sacre du Printemps and Cendrillon, Palais GarnierOh, Paris! The city of love! And the ballet they put on was equally romantic. First up, was the absolute masterwork that is Le Sacre du Printemps. Choreographed by the revolutionary Vaslav Nijinsky and accompanied by the groundbreaking score of Igor Stravinsky, it is truly a work that will move you in every sense of the word. This Paris Opera production was electric - the intensity of the movements, the dramatic lighting, and the power of the dancers truly captivated the audience.
Then we have Cendrillon, an enchanting piece, which left my spirit absolutely soaring! You know I love a good fairytale, and this one, a contemporary version by Rudolf Nureyev, did not disappoint.
Australian Ballet - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Sydney Opera HouseFor something truly innovative and visually stunning, you have to head to Sydney. The Australian Ballet’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is pure spectacle. A contemporary piece that beautifully captured Lewis Carroll's whimsical and magical world through dance. Imagine Alice falling down the rabbit hole and into a technicolor wonderland of creatures, fantastical creatures and daring acrobatic moves.
The talented dancers embraced the fantastical journey, conveying all of Alice’s confusion and excitement. Their vibrant costumes were a delightful feast for the eyes.
Netherlands Dance Theater - Walking Mad, The HagueFor the discerning balletomane who desires something truly avant-garde, there’s always the Netherlands Dance Theatre. Walking Mad was truly something special, exploring themes of mental illness and the fragility of the human psyche with stark and powerful movement.
The dancers are not only phenomenally talented, they were a pleasure to watch, conveying such raw emotions and displaying an astounding physical prowess. This company is truly breaking the mold in the contemporary ballet scene, offering a raw, uncensored perspective that I absolutely adore.
Kirov Ballet - Swan Lake, Mariinsky Theatre, St Petersburg. Now, how could we have a month dedicated to ballet and not mention the majestic Russian ballet tradition! And there's no company more iconic than the Kirov Ballet. To see the Swan Lake in its birthplace, the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, is truly to experience a timeless ballet in all its glory.
The dancers were incredible, showcasing all the traditional grace and grandeur that makes Russian ballet such an art form to behold. I must admit, the performance left me breathless. Their intricate steps and breathtaking technical artistry - simply remarkable. Ballet of the Opera of Bordeaux - The Four Seasons, Grand Théâtre, Bordeaux
My journey this November continued to Bordeaux for a taste of the enchanting Four Seasons, choreographed by Angelin Preljocaj for the Ballet of the Opera of Bordeaux. Oh, what a gem! It was such a unique and vibrant experience.
I found myself swept up in the rich imagery, each season beautifully interpreted through dance and lighting. It’s always a delight to see ballet infused with innovative concepts. The Four Seasons is definitely a must-see for the adventurous balletomane.
And here are some other delectable performances I enjoyed throughout November:
Oh, my darlings! What a month it has been! Each performance, from the classics to the avant-garde, offered something truly magical to savor. Every movement, every glance, every pirouette told a story. As the lights went down in the last performance of the month, I couldn’t help but sigh - "What an intoxicating, heart-filling, and soul-stirring adventure!"
Let's hope December continues the magical dance, with more exquisite productions waiting to enchant. You can count on me to share the hottest, the trendiest, the most mesmerising shows! Remember darling, dance, like life, is about expressing your heart, your emotions, your spirit. And so, let's keep moving forward with passion, grace, and a hint of flamboyant joy!
Until next time, darlings!
