A Season of Swirls and Twirls

Darling, the world of ballet is positively buzzing this month! From the crisp air of Scandinavia to the sun-kissed shores of the Mediterranean, it's a symphony of graceful movements, opulent costumes, and captivating narratives. Let me regale you, my dears, with my observations from the front row – where else, naturally! – of these glorious productions.

Royal Danish Ballet: A Dance of Time

First, I was utterly swept away by the Royal Danish Ballet's revival of August Bournonville's "La Sylphide," held at the magnificent Copenhagen Opera House. Oh, what an exquisite performance! The ethereal beauty of the Sylph, embodied by the graceful Mette Melbye, danced with an otherworldly lightness that left the audience breathless. The drama, of course, played out around James, a young Scotsman entangled in the web of a supernatural world, portrayed with raw vulnerability by Thomas Østergaard. But it was the nuanced beauty of the ballet's choreography, the lilting grace of the ensemble, that truly captured my heart. It’s such a reminder of the enduring power of tradition, of how this delicate art form, born in the 19th century, remains just as potent today. It’s enough to make you wonder at the artistry of Bournonville himself and how he continues to inspire generations.

From the Bournonville Ballet to Balanchine's "Serenade"

Of course, tradition isn't all about the past, darling, but the way it allows contemporary interpretations. So from the historic stage of Copenhagen to the vibrant streets of New York, it was quite delightful to be transported to the New York City Ballet's performance of George Balanchine's “Serenade.” This seminal work of Balanchine's genius showcased the incredible agility and technical brilliance of the NYCB's dancers. They truly are the modern queens and kings of movement, dancing with effortless grace and power, their bodies like extensions of Balanchine’s original intent. What is most appealing is the way the ensemble, as a whole, moves as one body, seamlessly transitioning from one section to another in ways that are both effortless and incredibly difficult. That sense of synergy is not lost on the audience; everyone’s heads nodded to the rhythmic precision of this exquisite masterpiece.

A Journey into the Unknown

Meanwhile, over in the beautiful city of Lisbon, the Gulbenkian Foundation presented a delightful spectacle of creativity with "S.O.A.P - A Tale of the Senses," by the Portuguese dance company Companhia Instável. I was positively fascinated by the interplay of the human body with soap and water in a stunning production that was part-ballet, part-performance art. They were the first to bring such a captivating and challenging spectacle to the stage. It challenged traditional boundaries, bringing an undeniable energy to the stage and left you asking a question: "What is the story?". What makes the Companhia Instável special is their courage to challenge traditional norms in order to showcase their creativity, a move which resonates with every modern audience. If we must re-examine the ballet’s approach to dance then it’s important we applaud when troupes push for innovative ways of reaching the contemporary audience, a challenging feat. I loved every minute!

From The Heart of Latin America

But darling, this month's travels weren’t all about Europe. Latin America offered a tantalising journey of vibrant cultures through the lens of dance. The Festival Internacional de Ballet de Guadalajara, hosted by the Guadalajara Ballet Folklórico, provided an exciting opportunity to experience the traditional and modern sides of Mexican dance, each performance showcasing a rich cultural heritage. Their passionate storytelling in vibrant costumes truly transported the audience to a colourful land of dance and celebration. It truly had a contagious spirit! My darling, this is not your average recital. This is a passionate love letter to Mexican folklore!

A Note from Paris

Now, what would a review of ballet be without a whisper of the Parisian elegance? This month saw the Palais Garnier alight with the beauty of the Paris Opera Ballet, staging a contemporary interpretation of Marius Petipa's "La Bayadère." Oh, my darling, the exquisite costumes, the intoxicating music of the famed composer, the graceful choreography, all converged in a performance that simply stole my breath. You could see the history and lineage of this hallowed ballet as every movement spoke to a passion and expertise that took the performance to the heavens. Every note of Ludwig Minkus' music was exquisite and every graceful turn by the ballet dancers was intoxicating. I dare say, it was a perfect marriage of contemporary innovation with classical tradition.

More Than Just a Performance

Beyond the performances themselves, my darling, this month’s journey was a revelation of how ballet embraces inclusivity and diversity. This new era has made me realize that ballet is no longer limited to the traditional narrative. The inclusivity within these stages and ballets is quite touching. The inclusion of different bodies, gender identities, and narratives within each story brought to life an authentic narrative, with true emotional depths.

It’s also important to celebrate the artistry and beauty of each dance troupe, including those outside the grand houses and companies of the West. While our eyes often fix on Paris and New York, we should never forget the beauty of the cultural diversity of the arts.

This, my dears, is the heart of ballet – the vibrant pulse that resonates throughout the world, weaving stories and emotions through intricate movements and elegant expressions. Oh, how it speaks to us! How it connects us, across continents and through time, with the enduring power of artistry.
