Ballet Blitz: November 2023
Darling readers, what a glorious month it's been for the world of ballet! The autumn air is crisp, the theatres are alight with chandeliers and, dare I say it, the world of ballet is finally feeling as if it's back to its decadent, glamorous best! Let's dive into this month's whirlwind of tutus, tales, and triumphs.
London's Leading Lights: A Celebration of Royal Ballet Strength
The Royal Ballet, our beloved resident swans of Covent Garden, has certainly been putting on a show this month. They opened with a dazzling, vibrant production of Kenneth MacMillan's *Manon*. This, of course, is the one we all flocked to, drawn by the promise of a ravishing Maria Kowroski as a deliciously wilful Manon. She was simply breathtaking. Her technical prowess was evident in every dazzling, impossibly graceful turn. And, darling, the emotion she poured into those dramatic moments, especially in the final act! Tissues were, ahem, *very nearly* required! She was beautifully partnered by the charming and powerful Marcelino SambĆ© as des Grieux. Itās wonderful to see these two artists ā stars of a truly spectacular calibre ā given their rightful starring roles. This performance left the audience spellbound, a kaleidoscope of artistry and sheer theatrical magic.
This, however, wasn't the end of their autumn delights. A stunning, luminous production of Christopher Wheeldon's *The Winter's Tale* stole our breath with its magical story-telling and the incredible Beatrice Carney as the doomed Perdita. Her performance was as ethereal as snowflakes. The final tableau was something out of a dreamscape - utterly breathtaking! I dare say, darling, the *Winter's Tale* could easily become the 'it' show of this season. The ballet world, I am pleased to report, is on the brink of a Wheeldon revival, and with the *Winter's Tale* being both critically and audience acclaimed, I am certain he will go from strength to strength!
Parisian Perfection: Elegance at the Palais Garnier
Speaking of breathtaking, darling, one simply has to mention the new production of *The Sleeping Beauty* at the Palais Garnier in Paris. I donāt mean to sound presumptuous, but surely this is the ballet every discerning dance lover should experience at least once! It was as if time stood still within that most exquisite venue, the costumes as grand as a fairytale. I have to single out the magnificent, regal performance of Alice RenĆ©e as Princess Aurora. The quality of her dancing is superb, perfectly in keeping with this classical masterpiece. This show was absolutely radiant, utterly Parisian ā the quintessential experience of a balletomaneās dream come true!
A Breath of Fresh Air: A Contemporary Coup in New York
Across the pond, the New York City Ballet was, as always, the talk of the town. While we are forever devotees of classical works, the City Ballet also unveiled something quite special: a world premiere from the ever-brilliant Justin Peck. His new ballet *The Wanderer* had everyone talking! I daresay the critics were as entranced as the audience, and what a treat it was to experience such beautifully-executed, original choreography! With the talent of the City Ballet, Peck was able to deliver something powerful and thrilling, the themes of isolation, longing and hope danced out so vividly. A modern masterpiece. I hear whispers of the production possibly coming to London in the New Year. Letās hope it does - it would certainly bring a very welcome, modern breath to the London season.
Bold Moves: Beyond the Ballet Stage
Now darling, one mustnāt just confine our discussion to the big ballet houses! Let's not forget those daring artistic innovators pushing the boundaries beyond traditional stages. Take, for example, the mesmerizing āDreamlike Bodiesā exhibition now in its final month at the Hayward Gallery in London. For those with an appreciation for movement beyond the conventional ballet performance, I urge you to visit this unique show. Combining art and performance, the installation offers a kaleidoscopic view of bodies in movement in various states of dream, stillness, and grace. It's an evocative and thought-provoking exhibition, reminding us of the artform's profound ability to move us in new ways, even without a traditional stage setting.
En Pointe in Japan: The Ballet of a Thousand Cherry Blossoms
I cannot leave our round-up without mentioning the sublime dance happening on the other side of the globe! The Tokyo Ballet has just opened its autumn season, which included a rather remarkable *Swan Lake*. But even with such classic offerings, it was their bold, beautifully-crafted production of *Cinderella*, a dance-theatre spectacle with modern musical interpretations and some innovative set design, that made the biggest impact! Itās an ambitious re-imagining of a classic fairytale - think a more gritty, street-smart Cinderella with a strong modern female lead - which, itās worth mentioning, is something they are famous for in Japan.
Looking Forward
Well darling, there we have it - just a small taste of the vibrant, breathtaking ballet happenings of the past month. As the evenings grow longer and the colder months arrive, let's indulge in the stories of these graceful movements that ignite our hearts, our souls, and our imaginations. Now go forth and enjoy a splendid season of ballet!
