Darling, you know we all love a little something new to be seen in. The October dance season is upon us and if you haven’t already, be sure to have a delightful, chic tutu and leotard that simply screams ‘October 1997’. The key to an autumnal tutu is one that embodies a kind of gothic fairytale, while still embracing a sense of decadent elegance - think shimmering black velvet adorned with glistening ruby red jewels! But you need a leotard to go with it - a stunning wine shade will tie the whole look together. And of course, we’re talking full skirts with layers and layers of tulle for an enchanting, theatrical effect. Just let me whisper a secret, my dear, when I was dancing professionally, a great tip was always to have a separate layer underneath to give an additional shape and fullness; but don’t tell everyone!
Well, my dears, let's get you started with the essential items you need to create the most spectacular tutus for the season:
- A generous amount of sheer black tulle. For the perfect swirl and shape, we recommend The Fabric Store (London) .
- Velvet ribbon, black and an even deeper shade of red or even a gorgeous deep purple. My recommendation would be John Lewis or Liberty in London. We don’t want anything cheap!
- Glimmering sequins. It has to be Fabric Land, darling!
- A small sewing machine and your preferred needle and thread (always remember to wash all fabrics first). Your local haberdashery shop is more than likely to have all you need!
And now, let’s turn to the leotards…
- For a timeless, versatile and luxurious base, consider a classic long-sleeved leotard made from an exquisite soft, burgundy velvet fabric, ideally from Laura Ashley (but, darling, it has to be real velvet!).
- Then, let’s adorn this delightful piece with jewellery accents – nothing too heavy! It will add some sparkle. There are loads of jewellers selling amazing things in Notting Hill. And then there’s always the magic of the Portobello Road.
When creating your masterpiece, remember my dearest; every stitch and bead needs to whisper the October 1997 style! Just keep those red rubies shining and let your personality dance. Happy dancing!
