Leotard Style in Birmingham
Hello everyone! As a professional dancer and gymnastic enthusiast, living and performing in the heart of Birmingham, I know a thing or two about leotards! I thought I’d take a little break from all that plié and pirouette to share some thoughts on the latest and greatest in leotard fashion. Birmingham, being the culturally diverse city it is, provides endless inspiration for how to elevate a leotard from basic to breathtaking.
We all know that leotards have evolved from basic, single-colour cotton into sophisticated pieces with pops of colour, interesting cutouts, and unique design details. Whether you're in the studio, hitting the gym, or even just rocking a sporty look on the streets, there's a leotard for every occasion and taste. Let’s face it, Birmingham is awash with fantastic dance and gymnastic studios, and when it comes to finding the perfect leotard to compliment your training, there’s really something for everyone! So where to start?
Firstly, when I think about Birmingham’s diverse leotard culture, I think of all the wonderful places to shop and the wide variety of options that exist, especially if you are looking to get the latest fashion from an independent store rather than the high street brands. A great example is the [insert the name of a dance or gymnastic store]. This little gem of a store has a phenomenal range of leotards from both famous brands, such as Capezio and Bloch, and new independent designers, offering stunning cuts and colours, alongside everything else a dancer could possibly want - shoes, tights, warm-up clothes – the works.
Now, Birmingham is renowned for being an artistic hub – which is perfect for those wanting something truly unique in their leotard. Birmingham also boasts an excellent dance and gymnastics scene, so naturally there are countless workshops for students of every age – but it doesn't stop there - there are some fantastic events throughout the year that show off the best leotards and fashion from all different genres – the Birmingham Dance Festival, Birmingham Dance Awards, and the prestigious Birmingham Royal Ballet's events. All of them showcase spectacular leotards that set hearts aflutter! I’m always drawn to the designs on the catwalk at Birmingham Royal Ballet – they just ooze an exquisite glamour that combines timeless elegance with a touch of contemporary. It's truly inspiring for any aspiring dancer to see these graceful designs move effortlessly across the stage.
Moving from classic to contemporary, when I look at the amazing talent in the local ballet, contemporary and modern dance studios in Birmingham, I also think of the fantastic range of designs you can find from the plethora of leotard designers. These ranges include some pretty funky colours, too. The designs are fantastic. Leotards come in all sorts of patterns, shapes, and colours. You want polka dots? No problem! You want bold colours? Absolutely! A modern minimalist approach with chic lines? Bingo! You’re spoilt for choice! You can easily stand out from the crowd.
Leotard Styles & #LeotardStyle
For my own wardrobe, my leotards really are essential for my workouts, classes, and of course, rehearsals! So, let’s explore some leotard trends and my absolute must-haves in my personal collection – in Birmingham we know how to look the part.
I love to explore the wonderful range of contemporary styles on offer that showcase a dancer's silhouette to its full potential. They come in all shapes and sizes – the ultimate flexibility to suit different body shapes – so important when looking for a leotard that makes you feel empowered and confident. Think deep necklines with cool mesh panels for a sophisticated look or an asymmetrical leotard with flattering cutouts – a definite go-to for showcasing my own gymnastic moves.
Speaking of movement, how can I leave out the traditional, yet ever so elegant, ballet leotard? Ballet studios throughout the city always demand quality. My ultimate favorites feature classic, sweetheart necklines - super cute with my hair tucked up into a chic bun. I must confess, I absolutely love a touch of embellishment – whether it's rhinestones for extra glamor, a delicate embroidery for an ethereal touch, or even subtle laser cut details – they really add to the overall style.
One style trend that never gets old and fits with the modern vibe in Birmingham is the classic one-piece. If I need to be sure of having something I can wear for absolutely any kind of exercise class, the one-piece never lets me down. You can take the one-piece leotard and add a splash of something to bring it up to date. For example, look for leotards with eye-catching stripes and bright colours, or even experiment with animal print – bold choices are always popular – or add a matching pair of stylish shorts or leggings, especially as we transition into the colder months of the year, to stay warm as well as on trend! Of course, if you want to stay classic, the combination of the traditional, timeless black leotard, tights and a tutu will always look wonderful, especially in those stunning ballerina styles - think simple and elegant, or if you're feeling particularly bold, explore a voluminous tutu for something more impactful.
