Leotard Style: It's not just for the stage, babes!

Hey gorgeous, let's talk leotards! It might seem like an unexpected topic, especially if you're not a ballet dancer or gymnast like me. But hear me out – leotards are having a major moment right now, and they're not just for the studio anymore.

Here in Rayleigh, the leotard has become a staple piece of every fashion-forward gal's wardrobe. Think about it - leotards are comfy, flattering and versatile. They can be styled up or down, for a casual day out, or an evening look.

A Bit of History - From Ballet to the Boudoir

Firstly, we have to give credit to where credit is due. Leotards have always been associated with athleticism and dance. The first ones were created in the late 19th century as practice garments for male gymnasts. But thankfully, the trend has evolved, becoming popularised for female athletes and dancers and moving beyond the traditional black fabric.

Leotards have taken on different looks in recent years, from simple and elegant, to bold and edgy. The key to rocking the leotard look is choosing a style that suits your personality and taste. That might be a classic scoop neck for you, or a sporty racer back or even a sexy high cut with a mesh back for those nights out on the town!

The Style Inspo – Think 'Beyond Ballet'

Remember, leotards are incredibly versatile. I'm not just talking about your favourite black practice leotard that's always worn for rehearsals. While these staples do still hold their own (and with the advent of seamless fabrics they're more flattering and comfy than ever before) - it's the leotards with pops of colour or with beautiful detailing, cut out shapes, intricate back lines or mesh fabrics that will take your look to the next level.

So, how can you make this garment your own? You'll find that leotards make for a seriously cool style piece and with their increasing popularity you can find leotards in every colour of the rainbow, a plethora of patterns, as well as the traditional black colour. There's literally a leotard out there for everyone.

Think outside the box with some styling ideas:

  • Go Bohemian - A long skirt (think tulle or a flowing material, even vintage, floral-print!) with a simple leotard will give you a dreamy, relaxed and artistic look. I always feel like I could float off to a far away, tropical location. Just add sandals for a summery day look, or ankle boots for autumn, and a denim jacket on top to combat any unpredictable weather.
  • Layering with A Cardigan or Jacket – Add texture to your outfit by layering a vintage cardigan, chunky knit or a biker jacket over your leotard. This works really well in Rayleigh's often chilly climate (at least on our early morning training sessions at the ballet school).
  • The 'Overalls' Combo - Try layering a leotard with denim overalls. I think this looks especially flattering and cute and its a go-to casual outfit that still looks effortlessly chic and allows you to move freely.
  • For A Night Out - Team your leotard with a stylish pair of high heels (for example some platforms) and statement jewellery and you're good to go! For an extra dose of fun, you can even choose a leotard with a mesh detailing - maybe with a hint of sequins if you're feeling fancy! This is my personal fave night-out combo and with a little confidence, you'll always be the life and soul of the party.
  • Embrace The Tutus - You can totally wear a tulle skirt, which is basically a mini tutu! Just make sure you choose one with a length that flatters you (some of my mates go for a shorter length, but my fave looks are always mid-length with my fave knee-high boots for that edgy-romantic vibe). Team this with a fitted leotard, a cool bomber jacket or some layered necklaces, and a statement pair of chunky boots for a killer look. You will definitely be turning heads with this outfit.
