Leotard Style: From Fulham’s Dance Studios to the Street
Hey dance lovers, and fashionistas – it’s me, Eliza. If you follow my Insta @dancingqueen_eliza , you know my life is all about dancing – from ballet to aerial silks and contemporary to…well, basically everything. And as an extra bonus, I get to be an ambassador for the #leotardstyle revolution. I always tell my followers that if you are lucky enough to wear a leotard , you have the perfect base for a style win! #leotardfashion
Fulham is my neighbourhood - it's pretty much the fashion capital of London, don't you think? There are so many great shops and boutiques that would make a fabulous dance fashion shoot, with vintage threads just dying for a modern twist, especially a dance twist.
Now, if I were a ballerina on a day off in Fulham I’d start off in my favourite boutique, vintage shop , or independent designer space looking for an outfit for an afternoon of exploring. If I was feeling bold, a killer leotard on its own might be my choice, because , let’s be honest, the simplicity is striking, but I’d likely start with a long line or maybe A-line tutu style skirt that comes right to your knees. (It’s very in right now for dance fashion!). Or a pleated skirt. Anything that flows is the name of the game, even if it's a maxi dress. You have to imagine you’re a dancer, even off stage or off the gym. Let the fabric speak.
A Leotard A Day
As for footwear, if I was shopping in Fulham, I’d likely have ballet flats, or a pair of chunky platforms, on for that retro-ballerina style. Platforms or a little Cuban heel with a leotard is divine and perfect for shopping. You can dress them up or down with a cute oversized cardigan ( think cable knit or fringed) for that perfect autumn day in the streets of Fulham or for a long day on the go.
Let’s go back to that leotard as a key item for the perfect look for a day out and how you can make it your own with accessories, especially if you’re looking to add something unique to your day look.
A Touch of Glamour
Here are some thoughts on what’s hot, what’s trending, and how you can rock the leotard.
- Get That Colour Working for You! It’s got to be a good fit and colour- wise you want to keep it interesting by mixing with neutrals or wearing your favourite brights like fuchsia or emerald, if you’re into statement leotard. I really love the contrast of pastel tones and classic white against a black leotard! For extra elegance go for classic black and silver – perfect for day and evening. But really you can pull it off no matter what.
- What Makes It Street Smart? A fitted or looser leotard, it’s really your call but don’t forget, a cute bag is key – you want a leather shopper or chain bag or, of course, a cute dance tote (I have a fabulous one with my name on it, just so you know!), I find that’s the perfect way to go from dance class or rehearsal to drinks and shopping – you just can’t beat a cool bag. Don’t underestimate sunglasses as an accessory - that's the kind of item that pulls it all together. For more glam vibes I can never say no to some pearl earrings or a a bit of costume jewellery that catches the light when you are walking down the street, but remember – it’s about having fun with the style.
I hope this gives you a glimpse of my dance world and all the stylish things we can do with leotards. It’s all about personal expression. Don't be afraid to make a statement, to try different leotard styles (from ballet, gymnastics and, if you want to really step outside the box, aerial). Get out there, find your inner ballerina and unleash the beauty of a timeless wardrobe classic! #leotardstyle #leotardfashion #leotardlove
