Leotard Style: A Yorkian Take on Dancewear

Hello darlings, itā€™s your girl, Lily here, back with another fabulous foray into the world of fashion. And this week, weā€™re heading to York to talk about all things leotards. Thatā€™s right, those wonderful, versatile, body-hugging pieces of dancewear that can be styled in so many amazing ways. As a ballet dancer and gymnast, leotards are my absolute favourite go-to. But I've noticed a real shift in how we wear them - from the studio to the street. So, letā€™s dive into this latest leotard fashion trend.

Now, we all know York has an incredible reputation for historic architecture and quirky independent shops. Whatā€™s often forgotten is the vibrant community of dancers, gymnasts, and even pole dancers in this fabulous city. Iā€™ve recently visited a bunch of boutiques that cater to all these incredible communities. These havens of dancewear are overflowing with leotards in every colour, style, and design, perfect for unleashing your inner prima ballerina, aerial acrobat or gym bunny.

Itā€™s easy to get caught up in the sheer amount of choice and fall down a rabbit hole of sparkly rhinestones and colourful designs. Iā€™m going to share some of my absolute favourite looks and what really stood out to me.

Letā€™s Talk Style

Iā€™m starting with a trend that I think youā€™ll love, darlings. **Think colourblocking.** Those of you who know me, know I love a bit of clashing colours, and I was blown away by the beautiful colour blocking leotards available in York. This design style plays on combining contrasting colors to create a graphic, geometric look, often with bold lines and edgy shapes.

Some leotards showcased stripes, like a modern twist on classic ballet outfits. Some were more subtle and used colorblocking to add detail or emphasise certain parts of the body. And letā€™s be honest, when it comes to styling, who doesnā€™t want to show off their hard work and stunning silhouette? The good thing about this trend is it comes in both classic styles like scoop necklines and more modern V-necks, so it's really flexible for whatever your dance style is.

  • Mesh. Now, this trend, for me, just screams chic and trendy. Whether itā€™s strategically placed over the shoulders for a playful look or layered to create a beautiful contrast in textures, mesh really brings leotards into a contemporary style.
  • Cutouts. If you love a touch of drama and are ready to make a statement, this trend is for you. There are some stunning cutouts that can be dramatic on the back or shoulder area, adding a modern flair while also flattering your figure. I think these work wonderfully for pole dance performances.
  • High neck. For a more sporty vibe, high necks are your best bet. Often seen in gymnastics, these offer a sleek, almost superhero-inspired silhouette, with high-cut lines. Some shops are adding unique patterns to their high necks like checkerboards and animal prints, taking this classic design and giving it a modern twist.
  • Sleeveless, Cap Sleeves, and Long Sleeves. If you love to flaunt your arms and dance with confidence, then the classic sleeveless leotard is a go-to. But what about the chilly dance studio days? Cap sleeves and long sleeves provide warmth without sacrificing your sense of style. This trend really lets you express your personal style and there are leotards out there in every imaginable sleeve style.

One thing I absolutely adore is the play on fabrics that are being used. There's a vast array of options available from the super sleek and glossy, like those seen in pole dancing and rhythmic gymnastics, to the beautifully matte textures often found in ballet and classical dance.

Tutus are making a comeback.

Yes, you read that right, ladies! But they're not just for the stage anymore. Tutu styles have gone mainstream. They've ditched the traditional dance studio vibes and now embody that **ā€˜boudoir ballerinaā€™ aesthetic**. Think chic little ballet skirts paired with casual wear, sleek leggings, or even denim jackets. Itā€™s a super feminine look that can easily be styled for a variety of occasions. This isnā€™t your classic ballerina look. This is more ā€œcasual chic meets dancewear.ā€ There are stunning satin and tulle designs, making a statement while adding a hint of vintage style. This, of course, wouldnā€™t be complete without some gorgeous tutu-inspired dresses, available in shops that embrace the latest trends.

Speaking of dressing for the occasion, donā€™t be afraid to think beyond the classic. There are so many beautiful leotard-inspired pieces out there. Imagine those stunning cutouts we were talking about. Look out for tops and dresses featuring the same cut-outs! And, what's better than wearing your heart on your sleeve, well, *your dance moves* on your sleeves. A lot of clothing shops have taken inspiration from dance and ballet to create their own contemporary take on this timeless leotard style.

Styling Leotards Like a Boss

If you want to pull off the ā€œLeotard Lookā€ perfectly, itā€™s about finding the right pieces that make you feel fabulous. And remember, it's all about *you*. If you want to give it a super classy vibe, then try pairing your leotard with a high-waisted skirt or even a flowy palazzo pant. To tone it down, a sleek pair of black leggings works perfectly. It gives you that chic but comfy, effortless vibe. Donā€™t be afraid to accessorise!

  • Cardigans and jackets: These add that extra layer of warmth for a chilled out feel.
  • Belts: You can cinch your waist, which can accentuate your leotard or even just add a touch of polish.
  • Statement earrings: From chandelier earrings to chunky hoops, there's a perfect earring for your chosen leotard look. Let your personality shine.
  • Hair: Experiment with sleek buns, elegant braids, or even tousled waves. There are plenty of hairstyle ideas that complement your leotard style.
  • Sneakers: You heard that right. Pair your favourite sneakers with a leotard for an instant cool and casual outfit.

Speaking of personality, the wonderful thing about this whole trend is how unique and individual it can be. One person may go for a classic black leotard paired with a leather jacket, while another will go for a sparkly turquoise number paired with high-heeled boots for a dazzling party look.

#LeotardStyle: A Movement

I think itā€™s super amazing that weā€™re seeing a more modern take on a classic item. This is so much more than a trend. Itā€™s a move toward body positivity, owning your style, and taking whatā€™s traditional and adding your personal flair. And honestly, how fab is it that something worn for centuries for dance can be a staple item for our street style. I canā€™t wait to see where the future of the leotard trend takes us. Keep your eye out on my Instagram @LilyLeotards, as Iā€™ll be showcasing my favourite styles. So tell me, darlings, how are you styling your leotards?
