Leotard Fashion in Highbury

Hey everyone, it's me, your girl, Ellie, the ultimate Leotard Queen (and wannabe fashion icon)! I'm a professional ballet dancer and part-time gymnast, which means one thing: Leotards are my life! Not only do they keep you comfortable in the studio, but let's be honest - they're simply the most fabulous dance wear you can find! Now, Highbury's a haven for aspiring dancers (like me!), but the shops have been feeling a bit predictable lately, so I thought I'd sprinkle some leotard inspiration and create a little guide on finding those killer looks.

Finding Your Fit in Highbury

Listen, Highbury might have its fair share of traditional shops, but trust me, the fashion game's stepping up! Let's face it - the key to nailing a great leotard look is knowing where to hunt! Here's what I've learned:

  • Forget the Basics, Embrace the Sparkle - Seriously! Who needs just another boring black leotard? Get creative. Try a colour that makes a statement (think emerald green or sapphire blue!), and go all out on details. Think: sparkles, ruched sleeves, even little cut-outs - these are your allies. I’m personally a big fan of adding a mesh top layer for that ballerina chic! And while we're on colour, Highbury's new boutique, 'Swirl & Dance', has this stunning collection in shades of lavender. Dreamy! #leotardstyle
  • Ditch the Cotton - Go for a Microfibre Miracle! Believe me, you won't regret this one. The stretch and feel of good-quality microfibre make all the difference. You're going to be spending hours moving around, so comfort is king. Now, ‘Dance & Move’ on Highbury Corner has this awesome microfibre line with super-cute criss-cross back designs. You need to check it out.
  • Don't Overlook the Tutu! OK, you may think 'tutus are just for performances' but they can work for a day-to-day dance-chic vibe too! There's been this growing trend for a 'layered look' - try pairing a mini tulle skirt with your favourite leotard and leggings. Seriously, this can make any old leotard instantly trendy! There’s also this really chic boutique called ‘Twirl’ on Camden Road. They stock the most stylish, not to mention comfy, tutu styles.
  • Accessorise, My Friend, Accessorise! A statement belt (and I'm not talking just a dance belt) can transform your leotard game in seconds. This gives your look a bit of fashion flair while showing off your silhouette (always a win!). And a matching scrunchie? Essential. Trust me, my obsession is strong with this one! Oh, and I can’t go without mentioning the new jewellery trend: chains with rhinestones. My current fav! You'll find a great selection at ‘Dancing Queen' - that place is my go-to for statement accessories.
  • Look for Unique Finds! I recently scored this incredible vintage leotard at ‘Dance Heaven’. And guess what, they have a whole section for recycled dance wear! Not only are these vintage pieces super cute, they are eco-friendly and totally unique! Plus, I managed to bag a couple of super affordable tutus! Score!

From Dance Floor to High Street #leotardstyle

Listen, leotards aren't just for the dance studio. There's this amazing movement going on now where leotards are being styled for a more casual everyday look. And with a touch of creativity (like you'd expect from a dancer like myself!), they can work absolutely perfectly!

  • Leotard and Oversized Knit. I love the juxtaposition of the sleek leotard and an oversized knit or jumper. Think of a fitted long-sleeved leotard tucked into a slouchy, colourful jumper. It's such an effortlessly cool way to rock leotards for a day-to-day vibe!
  • Layer it Up With a Trench Coat!. For those transitional days when it's still a bit chilly but you want that fresh leotard look, throwing on a classic trench coat adds a touch of sophistication. Think a sleek, colourful leotard with leggings, and your favourite trusty trench! And those trendy leather jackets? Absolutely work. You could be a dancer by day, and then a runway queen by night!
  • Leotards as Tops! Don’t be shy! Let that leotard take centre stage. Team it with some high-waisted denim, a leather mini skirt or a maxi skirt! Think about contrasting the leotard’s colour with the rest of your outfit – black leotard, red skirt - bold and bright!

Sharing My Passion

Ultimately, it’s all about confidence and feeling good in your skin. When you wear something you love, your confidence radiates, and honestly? You feel amazing. Highbury, as I always say, has so much to offer when it comes to dancing and looking your best, so get out there and experiment. Whether it's a black microfibre number or a vibrant colour pop, a tutu for class, or a leotard for the high street, let's all get comfortable owning those amazing, versatile leotards and celebrating dance and fashion! And hey, don't forget to follow my Instagram (@elliedance) and hashtag #leotardfashion because we all gotta inspire each other!

Love and happy dancing,

Ellie
