Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu! This month, we're whisking you back in time, way back to the glorious year 1661, to a Parisian ballet that quite literally blew the minds of everyone who saw it! You'll need to grab your tutus, darlings, because we're going on a Parisian adventure...and guess what?! This month, it's with my sparkly new steed โ Magic Meg!
Yep, you heard right, darlings. You may have noticed a slightly larger pink flash alongside me in my blog photos this month โ well, that's Magic Meg, a shire horse who, believe it or not, loves a bit of ballet, too! This majestic creature, with her dazzling white mane and tail, her gleaming golden hooves, and a penchant for sparkling pink saddle cloths, is my new companion for travelling through time! And let me tell you, having a beautiful, strong friend like Magic Meg has taken time travelling to a whole new level.
But back to Paris, darling! Now, in 1661, there was something called a ballet de cour - basically, a grand ballet for the whole court, hosted by the royal family! These ballets were incredibly lavish and featured costumes fit for royalty! This particular ballet, called Le Ballet des Royaux, took place on November 11th, a Friday! That's our very special day, darling!
Le Ballet des Royaux, was not only beautiful but also exceptionally important because it celebrated the king's favourite! You know who I'm talking about! Louis XIV, the grand King Sun, the embodiment of extravagance!
As usual, darling, it was Louis who took centre stage in the most dazzling of outfits! I hear he wore a golden costume, quite the spectacular sight! The ballet featured some of the most renowned performers of the era, dancing like nobody's business. They even incorporated acrobatics into their choreography, talk about exciting! I bet it would have been a true visual feast, darling, something quite unforgettable. Imagine that โ acrobatics on stage! Now, that's entertainment, isn't it?
But let's not forget, darlings, these weren't just ordinary dancers. These were royal court members โ the aristocrats, nobles, and influential figures of the day โ showcasing their skill, grace, and most definitely, their fabulous fashion! That's what makes ballet so wonderful - the beautiful outfits, the grand performances! Don't you think it's just delightful, darling?
While in Paris, darlings, we found a little shop called 'Au Boudoir Rose' tucked away in a tiny, cobblestoned alley. Just my style, isn't it? They sell the most beautiful fabrics โ imagine the gorgeous pinks and floral prints that are perfect for those extra-special tutus, my darlings! They even had some pretty antique fabrics from centuries past. Of course, I simply had to buy some for my new costume collection. Imagine the wonderful pieces I can make! A beautiful Victorian era pink-silk tutu, or perhaps a flowing pink brocade tutu inspired by the exquisite dresses from the reign of Louis XIV? A bit of creative magic with Magic Meg's help and...bam! Time travel in the best possible outfit, darling!
There was one particularly interesting detail I found in a book about Parisian ballets, darlings. A particular style of footwear that caught my eye โ called chausson. A shoe specifically designed for ballet, made from leather with pointed toes and flexible soles! Imagine, ballet shoes already existed then! Oh, I do adore history and discovering the intricate details like that, it simply fills me with excitement. What's old is new again! And I'm sure you all know how much I love a vintage style, don't you darlings?!
With my leather backpack overflowing with these wonderful discoveries, and Magic Meg prancing happily, we bid farewell to Paris! I promise to bring you many more fabulous Parisian adventures soon, darling. But in the meantime, I must go. You know how it is โ more time travel adventures beckoning, a ballet to attend, tutus to create and endless, wondrous Parisian shops to explore! I've just found the most delightful new shop, filled with Parisian inspired jewellery! Imagine โ pearls and pink tutus, the perfect combo! Don't forget to keep your eyes glued to Pink-Tutu, my dears!
Much love and many sparkles,
Emma, xx
