Hello my darling darlings, it’s Emma here, your resident pink tutu wearing time traveller. Get ready for a whirlwind of excitement, because this month's adventure is absolutely incredible! It's 4th April, 1664, and we're headed to the first ever performance by the Royal Ballet, oh how fabulous!
Now, let's get you all up to speed on what’s been going on in the world of ballet: this is a particularly important date because it was the very first time this newly-established Royal Ballet troupe would grace the stage at the King's Theatre. It’s a time of pure theatre magic and the atmosphere here is positively bursting with anticipation. Can you believe that? It’s incredible that such an amazing ballet legacy began right here.
My trusty pink shimmering steed, Magic Meg, whinnies softly as we weave our way through the bustling streets. She, of course, is perfectly coordinated in her bright pink saddle cloth adorned with glittery sparkles, a true pink princess! Her hooves glisten gold, a delightful contrast to her pearly white mane and tail. This enchanting shire horse is just one of the perks of travelling through time, a true companion in my sartorial adventures!
I’m already brimming with excitement about the performance tonight. My rucksack is filled with excitement - a few snippets of sheet music, an original program, a little embroidered purse with some forgotten coins, and a scrap of a note mentioning the dance – a French court dance. A bit different from the dazzling ballets we’ve come to love today! But don't you worry, even back in 1664, there was certainly no shortage of drama and elegance. Just imagine the beautiful costumes!
Tonight, it’s all about elegance. The ladies of the court will be wearing long, elegant dresses in opulent colours and rich fabrics, complete with exquisite lace and intricate embroidery. Gentlemen will be decked out in luxurious silks and velvets. What I wouldn't give to be able to pop into a high-society soirée and get a glimpse of all those fashions. Sadly, time travel only allows for brief visits. Imagine how fabulous my pink tutu would look among all those fineries! Oh well, we can dream can’t we?
The performance begins and the lights dim, leaving the theatre in the soft glow of flickering candlelight. A sense of wonder washes over me as I witness the first steps of a ballet company that will go on to become a global phenomenon. They move with precision, a blend of grace and power. While the style may be different from the ballets I usually attend, there is something utterly magical in witnessing the birth of this exquisite art form. Every twirl, every leap, feels like a monumental step in the ballet's timeline.
What a joy it is to experience such a historical moment in time! As the dancers take their final bows and the applause ripples through the theatre, a warm, joyful feeling spreads within me. What an adventure, a time-travel adventure, and what a thrill to witness such an important event! This is the essence of ballet history, of what makes this art form so eternally captivating!
