Hey you lovely lot, it's your favourite time travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another adventure! This month, Magic Meg, my pink, sparkly Shire horse, with her dazzling golden hooves and flowing mane and tail, took me back to 1664. It was an epic time! Not just for the costumes, the shoes, the music…oh the music! but because we were there for the very beginning of The Royal Ballet! Insert heart eye emojis here! Let me fill you in…
So, this month’s time travel escapade led us to Paris. And boy oh boy, were the streets bursting with elegant Parisian society! Fancy frocks, the scent of fine perfume wafting in the air, and just a touch of grandeur…well, if that doesn't set your senses tingling, then you’re not a real tutu-lover! It's so thrilling, so different to our world.
Remember my beloved pink backpack? (Don’t even get me started on how amazing this bag looks!) This month, it's been jam-packed with beautiful ballet stories. I discovered some real jewels in the Parisian libraries, all about the rise of a young, very ambitious, Monsieur Louis XIV, the King himself! He wasn't just about fancy castles and elaborate dinners. He had this burning passion for the performing arts… especially ballet. This was a big deal, believe me! Think of all those magnificent ballrooms, and the ladies of the court, twirling around in silk gowns and velvet petticoats…well, they had the whole world in their tiny silk-clad ballet slippers.
It was King Louis XIV who actually founded The Royal Ballet in 1664! Can you imagine, the first official, official ballet company? Like a little tiny sprout growing into something much bigger, something with real roots and traditions… I mean, think of all those stories waiting to be unearthed, all those ballerina legends… we just have to keep our eyes peeled for the shimmering sequins!
What happened next, well, let's just say the story took a really delightful twist. Our dear King Louis, he got this fabulous idea of opening up his Academy of Dance right in Paris! Now, this academy, it wasn’t just a fancy name… this was where they trained real dancers, like professionals! It was so exciting! Think of all those dreams blossoming, of aspiring ballerinas getting that once-in-a-lifetime chance!
Imagine what it must have felt like… standing there, wearing that little pink tutu and a silk ballet skirt. Feeling that music rise from the instruments, the way it vibrated against your skin, the way it told you stories about elegance, about life and joy... And then you got to perform. Not just for royalty but for the whole nation! There was a grand ceremony in honour of the Academy, a spectacle that everyone was buzzing about! You wouldn’t believe it, the Parisian aristocracy was there, with their elaborate fashions and jeweled gowns! They were all talking about the costumes and the music… they were absolutely captivated.
Imagine having your own pink tutu on display, and the world turning to see you shine… That was how they felt back in 1664! That's where this wonderful magic of dance, and all its beautiful, historical traditions, truly started! It just makes you think about the sheer force of dance!
Right now, my backpack is full of Parisian dance cards, elegant music scrolls and a whole host of enchanting Parisian love stories! They all lead back to that magical moment, the founding of The Royal Ballet. I just know I’ve found another exciting chapter to my pink tutu chronicles!
