Hello, lovelies! It's Emma, your pink tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, back from a whirl through the 17th Century! April 4th, 1665 - a date for the history books, my dears. Or rather, the history journals that I've diligently been adding to!
This month, my faithful steed Magic Meg and I travelled to… well, I can't actually reveal the exact location! It’s a secret, for now, and will feature in a future blog post. I'm always getting caught up in my travel tales and giving too much away! But, the 17th Century was a very different world for ballet than it is today!
But before I get into all of that, you simply must hear about the exquisite ballet outfit I wore this month! I swear, it took three of the poshest tailors in Derbyshire to create a perfectly pink tutu that was all frills and bows. A masterpiece for the time, I tell you! You simply have to imagine, a pink tutu swirling amidst the grandeur of the time, like a sweet bubblegum dream in a world of heavy fabrics and subdued colors. Oh, how I loved the looks of sheer surprise and joy on the faces of the people I encountered! They just weren't used to such an exuberance of pink, such a glorious spectacle.
Now, back to the history. As I said, the world of ballet was very different back in 1665. Think more grand court dances and lavish spectacles rather than the ballets of today. There were no tutus - they were yet to be invented, and believe me, we've been eagerly awaiting their arrival for centuries!
Imagine it: costumes heavy with embroidery and embellishments, elaborate masks concealing the dancers’ expressions, the scent of powdered wigs lingering in the air… but what was happening in the world of dance during this month?
I managed to snag a ticket (and no small thanks to my magic time travelling bag, which seems to come in handy for everything!) for the Ballet de la Royne, performed in a luxurious Parisian palace! A dazzling performance featuring intricate steps, graceful figures, and a storytelling through gesture and movement that captivated me. Even the royals loved it!
This little ballet trip really put the 'Ballet' into my Time Travels, and as always, I’ve got plenty to add to my leather-bound travel journals - the music, the costuming, the sheer spectacle. My dear friends, I always try to incorporate the history and inspiration from every era into my dances back home. Each dance tells a story!
I promise, this blog post will have you yearning to spin like a ballerina, and who knows, perhaps you'll even consider a pink tutu, just like yours truly! I do know this: a little bit of pink magic goes a long way, and as I like to say: every day is a stage for a ballerina's dream!
Till next month, stay glamorous!
