Hey fellow tutu-lovers! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels! October's here, which means crisp autumn air, crackling log fires, and for me, a brand new adventure! I'm your resident time-travelling ballerina, Emma, and today we're whisking ourselves back to 1666, October 10th.
My trusty steed, the shimmering pink Shire horse, Magic Meg, was gleaming brighter than ever today. Her golden hooves and cascading white mane and tail danced in the morning light, reflecting the anticipation for our journey. My own outfit? Why, a glorious confection of pink, of course! My latest pink tulle tutu is quite a beauty - a delicate floral pattern woven into the fabric, the perfect accompaniment to my sparkling pink velvet bodice. A dash of blush-tinted eyeshadow, and I'm ready for anything this day holds. My trusty leather rucksack, full of my favourite pink ballet paraphernalia and my beloved notebook, is firmly secured on my back, ready to collect treasures of this extraordinary era.
Back to the 17th CenturyImagine, stepping back to a time when Louis XIV, the Sun King, ruled the French court with absolute grace and elegance.
As the pink mist surrounding Magic Meg faded, we found ourselves in the bustling city of Paris, where I glimpsed ladies in wide skirts and gentlemen in powdered wigs hurrying by. Such a colourful spectacle! As I rode towards the grand Palace of Versailles, I felt a thrill. This is the age of the elegant Ballet de Cour, the ballet of the court. This was the beginning of what we know today as ballet - formal, graceful, and imbued with an incredible sense of power and prestige.
Dancing with the RoyalsOh, what a joy to have witnessed this! King Louis XIV, dressed in an elaborate and luxurious costume, graced the stage with his own presence! It was a sight to behold! He performed a minuet, with his partner, his grace and elegance radiating a charm that mesmerised everyone in the room.
He wasn't just a patron of the arts; he actively participated, giving a royal stamp of approval to a world of beautiful dancing that captivated all of France.
The very idea that the monarch himself, a powerful, respected figure, embraced the art of ballet, solidified its position in society. It wasn't merely an entertainment; it was a symbol of the times - of culture, of power, of artistic refinement.
Discovering the Ballet of the DayMonsieur Pierre Beauchamps – the court choreographer at that time, revolutionised dance by laying the groundwork for the classical ballets we cherish today!
He is the one who established the five basic positions of ballet, the foundations of all movements. Imagine that - these fundamental principles that dancers around the world follow, originated right here, centuries ago! His legacy is woven into every arabesque, every graceful leap, every exquisite pirouette.
Ballet’s Artistic TransformationIt wasn’t all elegant court dances, though. While Ballet de Cour captivated the world with its formal beauty, I found the stage bustling with “serious” dance, full of expression, character, and story-telling. A captivating change from what we would consider typical court ballet, wasn't it?
Imagine being transported into a dramatic spectacle, a fusion of dance, theatre, music, and extravagant costume! Ballet became the artistic heart of the age! From mythological tales to comic skits, ballet resonated with emotions and narratives, reflecting the times.
Even within the grand setting of the court, I could see the spark of something bold, something new, emerging!
A Little Retail Therapy, NaturallyMy dear friends, can you imagine a time travelling ballerina without a trip to a grand marketplace for some shopping? This city has a bounty of pink!
There is such a vibrant explosion of colours and fabrics in Paris’ market squares, from rich velvets to crisp satins, that it nearly took my breath away. I can't resist adding some delicate pink lace trim to my tutu and a gorgeous, velvety, pink hat - such a stylish combination for a time travelling ballerina!
Back to the FutureI love exploring historical events and fashion - it always leaves me inspired! But it's time to say goodbye to this historical period and head back to my own time. My head's brimming with ballet stories, ideas, and experiences! I can't wait to incorporate some 17th century styles into my next ballet performance.

Please let me know if you would like me to continue the story! I could write about other historical moments for Emma, perhaps with her encountering other dancers in her time travel or more shopping sprees in different eras. 😊
