Pink Tutu Travels: Blog Post #201 - September 9th, 1677: A Royal Ballet Premiere!

Hello my darlings! It's Emma here, your pink tutu-wearing time traveller, ready to whisk you away to another breathtaking era of ballet! This month, we're stepping back in time to September 9th, 1677, a date that marked a momentous occasion in ballet history.

You won't believe the fabulous adventure Magic Meg and I have had! It all started with a rather splendid ballet performance I found mentioned in a dusty tome at the Derbyshire library. It spoke of a brand-new ballet called "Le Triomphe de l'Amour" being presented at the Paris Opera, created by the talented Mr. Pierre Beauchamp. Intrigued by the mention of "triumph" and "love" in the title, I just knew this ballet would be a magnificent affair, worthy of my time travelling tutu and Magic Meg's sparkly hooves.

We galloped through time and landed, to my delight, in the heart of 17th-century Paris! Imagine cobblestone streets teeming with horse-drawn carriages and men in powdered wigs, all looking rather dapper, and ladies in elaborate dresses with towering hairdos - just as fascinating as the ballet performances themselves.

The Paris Opera was breathtaking! Imagine soaring ceilings and gilded balconies adorned with exquisite sculptures. The stage was just a marvel, decorated with magnificent painted backdrops and elegant costumes. You know, I've always been a fan of theatrical details and those exquisite painted scenery backdrops just brought the ballet story to life, transporting the audience to a whimsical and romantic world. I just knew this performance was going to be special!

The Ballet: A Love Story Set in a Fairytale World

"Le Triomphe de l'Amour" was nothing short of magical. The ballet unfolded with a beautiful blend of dramatic dances and expressive storytelling. Imagine gracefully moving characters representing virtues like Love, Hope, and Glory, all adorned in intricate, glittering costumes. The dancers performed with incredible skill, conveying their charactersโ€™ emotions with just a flick of the wrist, a delicate gesture, a swirling pirouette. And oh my, the story! A tale of love triumphant over adversity. Imagine charming couples, noble kings, and mysterious enchantments. A touch of intrigue and romance โ€“ just the kind of stories that transport me back to a fairytale world.

You know, the music wasn't quite as familiar as our modern ballet scores, but there was a beautiful quality to the instrumental compositions. The sounds of lutes and harps, mixed with the soft whispers of the flutes โ€“ it truly brought an atmosphere of magic to the performance. It was the perfect setting for a tale of love and triumph.

Back in Time to the Court of Louis XIV:

Of course, I wouldn't leave a grand time travel without collecting some stories, memories, and precious ballet items. This trip, I was so lucky to stumble upon the magnificent court of Louis XIV! Just imagine me, in my pink tutu and with Magic Meg in tow, in the grand courtyard of Versailles, amidst an abundance of royalty. I managed to snatch a precious ballet booklet and a hand-drawn sketch of one of the original dancers performing in the premiere. You know, even today, these old hand-drawn sketches offer a glimpse into the passion and artistry of those times.

The fascinating details about Louis XIV and his patronage of the arts are quite incredible. Imagine this: Louis XIV was himself a passionate ballet dancer, and his court was renowned for its love of dancing and its role in developing this art form. I simply can't imagine what a performance must have been like, with royalty itself taking to the stage. My oh my!

And my dearest friends, I must tell you, that while I may love all things ballet, there's something especially enchanting about the historical context of it. Each ballet is a time capsule filled with the whispers of the past, reminding us of the joys and the challenges faced by dancers from earlier generations. And my dear time travellers, if you ever get a chance to see an original performance from a different era, do seize the opportunity, for it is truly an experience like no other!

Dress Like a Ballerina: My Pink Tutu Tips for the Month

Of course, no trip to the past could ever be complete without a little style inspiration! Imagine a vibrant splash of pink tulle bringing a touch of elegance and femininity to those cobblestone Parisian streets! If you are looking for ways to incorporate a touch of ballet into your own look, just try:

  • A tulle skirt: Layer it over your favourite jeans or dress for an instant ballet touch!
  • Pink ribbon: Add a touch of colour and elegance with a pink ribbon, tied around your hair or wrist.
  • Sparkly shoes: If you can't find shoes with actual toe shoes (those were rather difficult to find in the 17th century) sparkly heels add a glamorous touch!

I also recommend searching for pictures of ballet performances from this era. Notice the details in the costume designs, the grand poses, and the dramatic movements.
