Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog: Post 231 - A Royal Encounter at the French Court

Hello darlings! It’s your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another exciting adventure from the magical world of ballet history. This month, I’ve journeyed back to 3rd March 1680, a date that, while not explicitly a big event in ballet history, provided an absolutely enchanting peek into the glamorous world of the French court!

As usual, I was whisked through time on the back of my magnificent steed, Magic Meg, a sparkling pink Shire horse with a heart of gold (and hooves to match!). As I flew through the air, I felt that familiar tingle of excitement knowing another era awaited me. This time, we landed just outside the grand gates of the Palace of Versailles, and let me tell you, darling, this palace is just utterly spectacular! I couldn't wait to explore!

Now, my main reason for landing in 1680 was a little bit of a secret. It was rumoured that on this date, King Louis XIV, that epitome of style and sophistication, himself attended a performance by La Guimard, one of the most famous female dancers of her time. So, you can imagine the excitement bubbling inside me! The French court in the 17th century was just the perfect place for my pink tutu to make its grand entrance!

Arriving in Versailles, I was instantly swept up in the lavish atmosphere. The grounds were a vibrant tapestry of greenery and colourful fountains, and the air buzzed with the sound of chatter and music. The palace itself was just a magnificent masterpiece of architecture - all glittering gold and extravagant decoration. Honestly, you could almost get lost in its splendor.

My heart raced with anticipation as I finally approached the theatre where La Guimard was performing. It was nothing like our grand opera houses today! Think, smaller, more intimate space, adorned with intricate carvings and rich velvet. Inside, the air was thick with a scent of perfume and powder, the lighting from candle flames created a magical ambience. And the clothes! My goodness, the ladies were adorned with elegant silk gowns, their hair elaborately styled. And the gentlemen - in powdered wigs, brocaded jackets, and stockings. Oh, to have been born into this fashion-forward age!

As I entered the theatre, the air buzzed with excited whispers. And then, I spotted her - La Guimard herself! In all her majestic glory, she stood at the center of the stage, her elegance and beauty breathtaking. In truth, her dancewear wasn't what we’d consider a 'ballet costume' today - a simple flowing gown with minimal decoration. But I must admit, there was an air of simple beauty and graceful movement that had me spellbound!

The performance, much to my delight, involved graceful and fluid movements, showcasing La Guimard's artistry and skill. It was a delight to observe these dance moves that have formed the foundation of classical ballet! I felt so incredibly fortunate to be witness to this early evolution of the artform I adore.

After the performance, the palace bustled with social events, a flurry of flirtations, gossip, and music. It felt so authentic and utterly fascinating. I, however, took the opportunity to slip into the theatre, grabbing the attention of no one, except a rather pleasant gentlemen with a monocle. I couldn’t resist a quick chat, delving into his knowledge about the dancing at the French Court, absorbing insights into the origins of our favourite dance form. He even complimented me on my pink tutu (with a rather delightful blush).

While the pink tutu might not have been a familiar sight in 17th-century France, it made a memorable entrance, much to my own amusement. And though my trip to 1680 was fleeting, it felt so rewarding, a delightful journey to the origins of ballet, a moment in time where elegance and passion combined to create a mesmerizing performance.

The experience further ignited my desire to travel through time, to unearth more gems from ballet history, to explore the evolving stories of the artform that continues to captivate me! I can't wait for you to join me for my next exciting journey! And remember darlings, keep your pink tutus ready because we are aiming to conquer the world, one pirouette at a time!
