Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where pink tutus reign supreme and history comes to life. This month, weāre jetting off to the glorious year of 1682, specifically July 7th, to experience the enchanting world of ballet, all the while looking absolutely fabulous in my favourite pink tutu, of course!
Now, as you know, I, Emma, am a Derbyshire girl through and through, with a passion for all things ballet thatās positively bursting at the seams! So when Iām not pirouetting through a show or dazzling a crowd in my shimmering tutu, you can find me nestled in the library, lost in the pages of history books, diving into the rich tapestry of balletās evolution.
And today, Magic Meg, my loyal and sparkly pink shire steed, and I are taking you on a whimsical adventure to explore a significant day in balletās past. Magic Meg is just the loveliest horse you ever did see, with her golden hooves, her white mane and tail that cascades like spun silk, and a shimmering pink coat that just sparkles in the sunshine. Of course, no travel through time is complete without a trusty rucksack. Mineās a sturdy, beautifully worn leather affair which I carefully fill with ballet treasures and stories, souvenirs from each journey to share with all of you.
Letās travel back in time, shall we? Imagine it: 1682. The streets are cobbled, the air carries the scent of fresh bread and the gentle clip-clop of horse hooves, and France is abuzz with excitement - because, you guessed it, it's a ballet night!
On July 7th, 1682, the Parisian audience at the AcadƩmie Royale de Danse would be graced by the "La Princesse d'Elide," a magnificent, grand opera-ballet masterpiece! This performance was not just an elegant showcase of dance, it was a spectacle of intricate storytelling and exquisite stage design. Just picture this, my darlings, the elegant ladies and gentlemen, dressed in their finery, taking their seats as the orchestra played, setting the stage for a night of magic and wonder. It's truly an honour to have Magic Meg carry me to such a magical evening in ballet history.
This specific production wasn't just any performance. It was an early masterpiece of French ballet by the remarkable Jean-Baptiste Lully. This genius choreographer was considered the king of French ballet during his era. His work blended the technical grace of courtly dance with theatricality, setting the stage for the breathtaking art form we know and adore today.
The āPrincesse dāElide,ā like much of Lullyās work, is a vibrant story ballet. It recounts the romantic adventures of an eponymous princess, who, through love, courage, and, of course, graceful dance, finds her way through many a trial and tribulation. Just imagining the elegant movements and passionate performances on that stage! It would be a true delight to witness this classic, the beauty of the story, and the spectacle that would have unfolded! I could simply picture myself wearing my own lovely pink tutu and being transported back in time to take my place in the audience!
As the enchanting performance concluded, the audience would erupt in cheers and applause, the echoes of music and cheers remaining long after the curtains closed. What a captivating journey it would have been! This journey brings home the fact that ballet is a truly global art form with roots deeply woven into the rich tapestry of time. I often wonder what these pioneering dancers would think of our contemporary ballet scene, wouldnāt you, darlings? The elaborate, dynamic performances we take for granted are, in a way, born of these earlier masterpieces.
Now, even if I canāt waltz through time in my tutu like I could in this dream, I am fortunate to be able to live through those times through our research and see these beautiful historical productions recreated in new, breathtaking ways on the stage of today. From the magnificent "La Princesse d'Elide" to modern ballet classics, there is a dazzling world of dance for us all to discover.
In the spirit of that remarkable history, I always try to incorporate a touch of vintage style and ballet grace into my own ballet looks. A dash of tulle, a delicate floral pattern on my tutu, or a delicate satin ribbon, a piece of beautiful vintage jewelry - all these can add a subtle touch of past elegance into our modern ballet attire. You just have to think of your favorite classic ballet era and you can weave the beautiful elegance of that time into a current ballet look!
This little adventure through history only makes me more determined to encourage all of you to wear pink tutus, my dears! After all, why wouldnāt you want to dance through life feeling like a princess!
Until next month, I bid you all a fond farewell, but remember to stay tuned! I've got more exciting ballet-filled journeys to share. Emma
