Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog: Post 277 – January 1st, 1684: A Royal Ballet Debut!

Hello darlings, and welcome back to my Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog! I'm Emma, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be back with you for my January 1st post. It’s always such a treat to be whisked back through time on a magical journey with my beautiful pink shimmering Shire horse, Meg. Can you believe, she has a mane of white like spun moonlight and her hooves are purest gold, all a perfect match for my pink tulle! It’s a bit nippy out there, I tell you, especially when we're bouncing around 17th-century France. This month I'm whisked off on a royal adventure - prepare yourselves for a ballet debut!

I just adore discovering how ballet unfolded throughout history. This time, my Pink Tutu time travel mission takes me to the Palais Royal in Paris. Now, imagine a dazzling courtyard with a stunning, gilded theatre nestled within. It’s here, right at the very start of January 1684, that we have a theatrical triumph on our hands – a debut of monumental significance! You see, a brand new type of ballet spectacle is taking center stage, featuring dancing and theatre combined in a way never before seen!

As I stroll through the courtyard, a vision in pink tulle (naturally!), my rucksack already bursting with ballet memorabilia and stories from the era, I’m mesmerised by the bustle of nobles and dancers alike, all beautifully dressed in extravagant fashion. Lace ruffles, exquisite velvet, and jewel-toned silks swirl around us, as everyone gathers for a treat.

And here’s where the history magic comes into play – we’re talking about the first ever ballet to include an act entirely focused on music! It’s titled "L’AstrĆ©e", and, darlings, this production is set to make ballet history! You see, until now, dance has typically been presented within larger theatre spectacles or operas, serving as a sort of flamboyant flourish within a narrative context. However, this ballet puts dance itself front and centre, with an act dedicated to celebrating the transformative power of music. It's a major step towards what we now recognise as the ballets we love today!

The courtyard hums with anticipation, I’m even starting to get a little excited (no, it's more like a flurry of butterfly wings in my stomach). This is no ordinary ballet, and ā€œL’AstrĆ©eā€ has some famous figures in its story. You might know some of the names! Jean-Baptiste Lully, that legendary name of Baroque music, is the composer, he created a breathtaking score. The libretto was crafted by Philippe Quinault, known for his witty words, who also penned some wonderful operas in his time. And let’s not forget Charles-Louis Beauchamp, the leading choreographer of the time, whose movements are, shall we say, revolutionary in this very special ballet.

Oh! The stage curtains open, and here it is! A swirling panorama of graceful dance forms unfold under the watchful gaze of the royal court. It’s a triumph, darlings! Every elegant move and shimmering costume is simply divine! As I absorb the grandeur of the ballet, I can’t help but imagine myself centre stage, twirling with absolute abandon! This ballet is truly something special.

From here on out, I just know dance will soar to even greater heights of artistry. A little birdie tells me that there’s talk about setting up a permanent place for ballet performances! Could we see the emergence of proper ballet schools in the years to come?

However, this magnificent performance isn't the only thing happening in the ballet world this January 1684. Here’s a glimpse at what else is capturing hearts and minds across the globe, gleaned from the stories and gossip I've collected on my journey!

  • Across the Channel, in London: This month sees the start of a new dance class at the famous Playhouse Theatre, bringing ballet classes to the public and furthering the movement’s reach across the English capital. Can you imagine learning graceful steps just like those you see on stage? The classes are drawing quite the crowd of aspiring dancers and eager enthusiasts alike, which makes me smile knowing we’ll continue to see even more growth and innovation in the future of ballet. I’ll definitely pop in next month and learn a few steps from these exciting newcomers!

  • All the way over in Italy: Now, we might have an explosion of talent in Paris, but the Italians haven’t been resting on their laurels either! The great city of Venice, renowned for its elegance and sophistication, is hosting the start of its Carnival this January. Imagine the costumes, darlings! The revelry is reaching fever pitch, and within those captivating, and quite frankly, a little naughty Carnivale celebrations, dancing holds its rightful place! With such a flourishing scene in Venice, one might be forgiven for feeling as though a ballet revolution is brewing!

  • Further East in Vienna: The Viennese are known for their grace and magnificence, and dance is certainly not lost on the beautiful capital of Austria. I hear a new ballet is gracing the stage of the Hofburg Theater, but alas, I've not got a glimpse of it yet. You see, it's by a composer with a rather… peculiar… name… I think it might be ā€œSalomon" something? whispers Maybe I'll swing by next time.

Darlings, as I journey back to my cosy cottage in Derbyshire, I am truly amazed by the power and beauty of dance. The dance world in January 1684 feels positively bursting with potential. The excitement for this form of artistry is tangible - a beautiful, inspiring thing, isn’t it? And don't forget, there are so many exciting new discoveries on the horizon - new dances, new music, new ways to express ourselves. I can't wait to tell you all about them.

Now, as I sit here writing to you, I'm filled with inspiration to don my most glamorous Pink Tutu, step onto the stage and whirl into a joyous world of dance. Perhaps it's the echoes of that grand opening in the Palais Royal or the echoes of the magnificent waltzes that still resonate in the Hofburg Theater. No matter the reason, I'm absolutely ready to continue sharing my passion for all things pink, tutus, and the magic of time travel with you.

Until next time, darlings, stay fabulous!

Love always,

Emma
