Pink Tutu Travels: 4th April 1684 – Ballet in the Court of Louis XIV! (Blog Post #280)

Hello lovelies! Emma here, your trusty pink tutu-wearing time traveller, back with another enchanting tale from my latest journey! This month, I’ve been waltzing back to the 17th century, landing right in the heart of Louis XIV’s opulent court on the 4th of April, 1684.

Now, let’s just say, you can imagine the sheer glamour of the occasion. Every step I took, my pink tutu seemed to shimmer a little brighter, its fluffy layers whispering stories of centuries past. Magic Meg, my sparkling pink shire with those glorious golden hooves and flowing white mane and tail, stood proud, perfectly complementing my own pink attire. She loves the fancy dress and the attention just as much as I do. You see, my dearest readers, back then, dancing wasn’t just a form of art, it was a status symbol.

The Royal Academy of Dance – It all Begins

Did you know that 1684 marks a pivotal year in ballet history? It was this very year that the esteemed Académie Royale de Danse was founded in Paris by Louis XIV himself, the Sun King! You could practically hear the whispers of history around me as I gazed upon the magnificent Palais Royal, its grandeur matching the King's legendary love for all things beautiful. He saw ballet as a key expression of power, and wanted to elevate it to the highest heights of artistic prowess.

The Ballerina and the King

Imagine my joy upon discovering that there was a royal ballet performance taking place at the Palace of Versailles that very day. The excitement nearly made me spin right out of my own tutu! It was here that I found myself transported to the heart of Louis XIV's world. The grandeur of the setting was simply breathtaking - shimmering chandeliers casting pools of light onto richly-decorated walls.

From Ballet to Ballroom: A World of Elegance

It wasn’t just the courtly dance itself, darling, the sheer elegance of it all took my breath away. Even the very costumes seemed to have a story to tell! The dancers’ silks and velvets shimmered, echoing the refined atmosphere, the court ladies' elaborate gowns swirling like petals in a waltz. This wasn't simply dancing, it was a kaleidoscope of fashion, artistry, and history intertwined.

Oh, and the food? You'd think it was all about eating with your eyes! Delectable patisserie, fresh fruit, and elaborate platters, each meticulously arranged. I even managed to snag a dainty pastry shaped like a ballerina, just for myself, of course. Who knows? Maybe that's how I got my love of ballet from!

More Than a Dance: Ballet As Storytelling

But darling, it was much more than simply visual spectacle. The performance itself was truly captivating. Each gesture, each twirl, each leap, whispered a silent tale. And then I noticed it - there was a dancer, just as captivating as her peers, who caught my eye, dancing with the kind of joy and expressiveness that made my own heart dance. Her movements were like a song, and the entire court fell silent in awe, her grace an ode to the story unfolding before their very eyes. It made me yearn for my own ballet performances.

I even snagged myself some very lovely fabric from the period. Can you imagine me, on the cobbled streets of Derby, donning a historical garment? Now that would really cause a stir, just you wait!

It’s not every day you get to step into the era of Louis XIV, darling, but even when you're back home in good old Derbyshire, ballet history is everywhere. It’s all a part of the rich history of our beloved ballet world, waiting for every ballerina to discover it.
