Pink Tutu Time Travel - Post 311: 11th November 1686 - A Ballet Debut in Paris!

Hello my darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another exciting escapade! This month, I'm whisking you all the way back to Paris in 1686! Now, hold onto your tutus, because this trip is all about ballet!

The date? 11th November 1686, and a very special event is about to happen: the debut of Le Triomphe de l'Amour. Now, you might think that ballet doesn't have quite the history you'd expect - that it just appeared magically in the 19th century, right? Wrong! This masterpiece by the legendary composer Jean-Baptiste Lully was a spectacular example of ballet's early grandeur!

This magnificent performance wasn't your typical ballet show. It was a true spectacle with singing, dancing, elaborate sets, and opulent costumes. And I was lucky enough to be front-row center thanks to my darling Magic Meg, a shimmering pink Shire horse with golden hooves. Talk about making an entrance!

Imagine this: a theatre, its walls adorned with silks and velvet. Glimmering chandeliers throw light on the stage as the King, Louis XIV, takes his place. You're all settled in your plush velvet seats, waiting for the show to begin. Can you just imagine how excited the Parisian audience was, thrilled by this grand spectacle?

Now, I have to admit, there wasn't a pink tutu in sight! Gasps! Shocked face emoji! Can you believe it? I mean, can't we even dream of tutus this early in the century?

However, it's a true testament to ballet's power, even before the invention of the tutu! It made a grand statement! I saw intricate courtly costumes that combined graceful movement with a touch of majesty. A little sparkle, maybe a touch of silk and velvet - definitely elegant, but in an understated way that begged for the brilliance that later tutus brought to the stage.

Oh, the costumes I’m adding to my backpack right now, all carefully labeled and detailed - can you just imagine my ballet history collection growing more fabulous by the month?!

We talked about how ballet was all the rage back then. Louis XIV was actually considered a dance fanatic! He danced like it was no one's business! You can tell he had an absolute love affair with ballet and he truly believed in its power and importance - a perfect example for how we can look at ballet today! The Royal Academy of Dance, that he helped establish is still influential to this very day - can you believe that?!

We explored the streets around the theatre, trying to get our hands on a bit of gossip and find out what the Parisians thought of their favorite Danseur and Danseuse. You could see it all in their eyes - how thrilled they were for the start of each ballet performance.

Now, this is why I travel, folks! Just to capture those glimpses into the heart and soul of a new generation who lived and breathed ballet, just like we do today. It was a privilege to have an audience of Parisian elites who had just as much appreciation for the beauty of ballet as I do!
