Pink Tutu Travels: 1689, August 8th - A Royal Ballet Birthday!

Welcome back, darlings! This month on Pink Tutu Travels, I’m waltzing back in time to August 8th, 1689 – the very day that the beloved French ballet dancer, Marie Camargo, was born!

It’s been a whirlwind month of pink tutus and ballet adventures, my dears. Let me tell you, time travel with Magic Meg, my trusty pink-sparkling Shire, is no easy feat. We've been whizzing through time like a pirouette in a gale!

This month’s journey landed us right in the heart of Louis XIV’s court in Versailles. The sun was shimmering off the grand palace, reflecting off the gilded details, and I felt my heart soaring! A royal court visit was calling, my loves, and I knew it would be simply divine!

A Birthday For a Ballerina

This is a particularly special day for me as it’s the birthday of Marie Camargo, the ballet legend! Yes, my dears, she was the one who defied tradition and broke the shackles of long, trailing gowns that limited ballerinas’ movement. Imagine, trapped in yards and yards of silk while trying to perform! Unthinkable!

Camargo was a firecracker, my loves. She ditched the restrictive skirts for shorter, lighter ones, showing off her gorgeous legs and allowing her movements to soar! I mean, a ballerina’s legs are works of art, aren't they? They deserve to be seen! I imagine she sparked a real scandal in her day!

Versailles – The Heart of Dance

It wouldn’t be a Pink Tutu Travels blog post without some exquisite fashion and stunning ballet. Now, the dance world was totally different in those times, my loves. The court dances at Versailles were about beauty and elegance, rather than the acrobatic flourishes we adore today.

As I peeked through the window of a ballet performance, the sight took my breath away! Imagine rows and rows of richly-dressed courtiers waltzing to the sound of violins and harpsichords. The whole scene felt straight out of a fairy tale!

Bringing History Back to Life

I was quite overcome with emotion as I felt the history around me, my loves. There was a special kind of magic that swept through Versailles, a delicate air of glamour and excitement that brought me back to my love for the artistry and the magic of ballet!

Of course, no journey through time would be complete without a bit of shopping! It wouldn't be Pink Tutu Travels without some vintage finds, right? While strolling through the bustling market, I found the most exquisite pair of antique dancing shoes. Made of delicate, pale blue silk with ribbons, they are so enchanting. I already picture them on my feet for a performance - just picture the drama!

But it wasn't just about clothes and shoes. This month, my darling dears, my rucksack is bursting with stories, historical tales of daring dancers like Camargo and how they shaped the world of ballet as we know it. Imagine the audacity and sheer courage it must have taken to break away from centuries-old traditions. Talk about a power move!

Pink Tutu Inspiration

Remember, darlings, even back then, people danced and loved to see beautiful movement! And while times have changed, our love for the art of ballet endures! I think that’s one of the things I love about my Pink Tutu Travels. There’s something magical and eternal about this dance form. And, just like Camargo, I want to bring a bit of this timeless elegance to the world!

That’s why I believe that everyone can and should wear a pink tutu, my loves! Don’t be shy about it – express yourselves and dance like no one’s watching!

Let's dance, my dears!

Until next time, keep dancing, keep shining, and never be afraid to embrace the joy of pink tutus!

Love,

Emma
