Post #372: A Twirl Through Time – December 12th, 1691! 🩰💖

Hey there, tutu lovers! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood ballerina and time-travelling enthusiast, ready to whisk you away to another enchanting chapter in ballet history! As always, my trusty steed, Magic Meg, a magnificent pink sparkling shire with golden hooves and a white mane and tail (a girl's got to have a little glamour on her travels!), is prepped and ready for our journey.

Today's adventure takes us all the way back to 12th December, 1691. The air is crisp, the London streets are bustling, and the scent of chimney smoke hangs heavy in the air – definitely the perfect setting for a ballet-themed adventure!

Before we embark on our exploration, let's talk fashion! My pink tutu, today, is a bit more…historical, if you will. It's a soft silk confection, inspired by the gowns of the period, with delicate layers of lace and a touch of shimmer. Of course, it still boasts a charming pink hue!

Stepping Back in Time 🩰

Upon arriving in 1691, we found ourselves in the midst of the glorious era of Louis XIV, a time when the French Court embraced opulent dances and theatrical displays. Back then, the concept of ballet as we know it hadn't fully developed. It was still primarily a courtly affair, intertwined with lavish courtly festivities and masquerades.

We’re standing before the Palace of Versailles, where dance and ceremony were closely entwined. Just imagine: elaborate costumes, intricate choreography, and the delicate melodies of a court orchestra – a true visual feast! Imagine powdered wigs, elaborate gowns, and dazzling jewels… the fashion alone would make a girl’s head spin!

But what would the ballet scene be like? Did the courtly dancers grace the stage with elegant pirouettes and graceful leaps? Well, not quite. These courtly dances were more about stately movements and rhythmic steps, demonstrating poise and grace. Think minuets and other formal dances that showcased elegance and refinement. Think of it as the very early beginnings of the elegance and poise we find in ballet today!

My backpack, brimming with my time-travel goodies, was overflowing with discoveries:

  • A leather-bound book containing early ballets written as more a play script for the court, featuring beautiful illustrations depicting those stately dances! It is utterly charming!
  • A faded pamphlet promoting a ballet show performed by the King's Chamber Ballet, an elite group of dancers at the royal court, whose members were often the most talented courtiers, skilled at fencing, and of course, dancing!

The world of ballet was about to be transformed – and in our next trip through time, I bet we’ll find a much more developed ballet world in just a few short decades!

Back to the Present 🕰️

That’s a wrap on this trip back in time! Back here in the 21st century, ballet is blossoming. There’s a ballet happening just about every day.
