Pink Tutu Time Travel: A Whirlwind Tour of 1699! (Blog Post #463)

Hello, darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-traveller, ready to whisk you off on another breathtaking ballet adventure. This month, we're hopping aboard Magic Meg, my gorgeous pink sparkling Shire horse with those oh-so-dreamy golden hooves, and galloping back to the 7th of July 1699!

Now, I know what you're thinking – 1699?! Wasn't ballet, like, just a twinkle in someone's eye back then? Well, my dears, you'd be surprised. Ballet was already flourishing, evolving, and absolutely captivating audiences!

Before we dive into the captivating world of ballet back then, I just had to gush about my outfit for this trip! I opted for a stunning pink tulle tutu with a soft, flowing skirt. Its pale, blush tones blended perfectly with my ruffled pink silk blouse, while my trusty pink leather ballet flats completed the ensemble. Naturally, a touch of sparkle was a must – a dainty pink velvet ribbon adorned my hair, and a tiny, pink jeweled bow glittered on my satchel.

Speaking of my satchel, darlings, it's a vintage treasure trove for all things ballet. I've filled it with beautifully hand-painted programmes from ballet performances I've attended throughout the centuries, antique dance shoes, even a charming little pocket-sized ballet book. Oh, and don't forget the handwritten dance notes and sketches – absolutely priceless!

Anyway, back to our time travel adventure. Arriving in 1699, I was immediately struck by the grandeur and elegance of the world around me. I mean, imagine the opulent ballrooms! The candlelight twinkling in the grand halls, gentle melodies drifting on the air… Just picture those exquisite gowns and suits – all the ladies in their lace and satin, and the gentlemen sporting elegant breeches and powdered wigs! It was a veritable scene from a ballet performance!

This was a pivotal time in the world of ballet. The famed ballet master, Pierre Beauchamp, was captivating audiences with his innovative techniques. His pioneering work led to the introduction of codified ballet steps, and it’s fair to say his methods paved the way for the graceful choreography we adore today.

One of the fascinating things I discovered about ballet back then was the significance of masks! Can you imagine? Dancing with a masked face! Apparently, masks allowed dancers to embody characters with even greater intensity. Who needs emotive facial expressions when you have a beautifully crafted mask! Oh, darling, I just have to get my hands on some of these exquisite creations! Think of the pictures I could get on Instagram.

Sadly, no major performances were scheduled on this day, so I couldn't have a fancy theatre experience – but luckily for us, 1699 was full of the buzz of rehearsals. The excitement and anticipation that crackled through the air as the dancers warmed up and prepared for their big performances were infectious!

I managed to steal a few minutes of backstage fun, peeking through a doorway and observing a class taught by Pierre Beauchamp himself. The intricate footwork, the fluid gestures – just absolutely enthralling. The focus and passion on the dancers' faces as they practised was so moving! I swear I could practically hear the symphony of the music playing out in their steps.

Another amazing find during this time trip? Fashion! While it might be tempting to focus on the glitz and glamour of courtly dances, ballet fashion in 1699 wasn't exactly the tutu paradise we know and love. The dancers were all decked out in elegant silks, satins, and velvet, creating a sense of aristocratic flair. Oh, my darling, I could just imagine what would happen if we all embraced ballet style with a 17th-century twist – imagine the outfits! Think ruffled collars, flowing gowns, and elegant embroidery – a perfect marriage of grace and history!

Oh, darling, this trip has definitely sparked an idea. For our next show, imagine us performing in inspired-by-1699 attire! It will be positively decadent!

Before I go, let me tell you about how I funded this ballet adventure! You guessed it, I danced my little pink heart out. I took to the stage, twirling in my shimmering tutu for a select group of theatre aficionados in 17th century London. My performance received a standing ovation! The applause, the gasps, the delighted cheers… pure ballet magic. And guess what? It wasn't just about the glamour! Those kind souls helped me secure enough gold coins to cover the cost of the journey.

As always, darling, remember the true magic of ballet lies in its enduring spirit of elegance, creativity, and storytelling! So, why not join me on the pink tutu train?

Keep twirling,

Emma.
