Hello darlings! It's your favourite tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, back with another exciting adventure through the wonderful world of ballet! This month, we're jetting back to 7th July, 1701, a date buzzing with intrigue and hidden ballet treasures. Grab your favourite pink tutu (mine's a shimmering silk creation with hand-sewn pearlescent embellishments!), climb aboard Magic Meg, my pink-sparkling Shire with the golden hooves, and let's travel!
Now, I've got to admit, this month's trip is a tad different. It's not a big leap forward in time, but I've always loved delving into those quieter corners of history – the days leading up to monumental moments. We all know about the incredible ballet innovators like Anna Pavlova and Nijinsky, but what about the seeds that were sown decades before their brilliance blossomed?
And what a glorious, bustling world we find ourselves in on this 7th July! Paris is brimming with vibrant life. The Royal Court of Versailles is as sparkling and dazzling as a newly polished pair of pointe shoes, with King Louis XIV leading the way in a reign as dazzling as a diamond-encrusted tutu. The grandest and most exquisite balls are held in salons and palaces. You could say ballet, with its focus on elegant movement and graceful storytelling, was well on its way to becoming the cultural powerhouse it is today.
But while Paris is undoubtedly the hub for artistic energy, there's so much more happening on this day, even in faraway places. Just imagine, while courtiers dance the minuet in the French Court, in the city of Naples, a talented group of musicians is preparing to share the joy of their craft at the newly founded San Carlo Theatre. Could this be the first whisper of what will become one of Italy’s most celebrated opera houses? A dream ballet? Perhaps!
In London, a new book about dancing graces the shelves. It speaks of steps, patterns, and a focus on controlled, elegant movements. Now, we don't have access to this publication in its entirety, but who knows – maybe this early work sparks a burgeoning interest in ballet amongst the English, setting the stage for the incredible ballet productions that will come decades later!
And in my dear Derbyshire, England, the wind is whispering through the rolling hills, and families are enjoying a day in the country. Imagine, all the potential ballet dancers amongst them! They’ll be skipping in fields, maybe even attempting little pirouettes amongst the wildflowers, who knows?! It's truly fascinating to ponder the everyday moments of a time period so far in the past, moments that might have been stepping stones to the great ballet milestones we know and adore.
Of course, the real star of this time period is the illustrious King Louis XIV himself! The Sun King, as he was known, is synonymous with a passion for dance. He actively participated in ballet performances, was even the protagonist of several of these magnificent ballets. We can’t forget he was responsible for the establishment of the famed Académie Royale de Danse in Paris – a school that cultivated the artistry and skill that were soon to grace the stage. Imagine studying alongside a young choreographic prodigy, under the King’s watchful gaze – oh the stories that would be written on that dusty floor, wouldn't it be magnificent?
Now, imagine a young, bright-eyed girl attending a ballet in one of these stunning palaces or theaters. It could be Paris, Naples, or even London. The grand halls adorned with tapestries, the musicians playing stirring melodies, the dancers moving in exquisite grace and precision. How would this young girl be feeling? Excited, awed? Maybe inspired enough to wear her own tiny, colourful tutu – maybe a bright, shocking pink? Now that would have made a fabulous image for history books!
On this particular 7th July, our pink-tutu world seems brimming with ballet aspirations, a vibrant tapestry woven from tiny steps and grand ambitions. Just like the King, my lovely dancers, I am forever encouraging you to take those steps! Maybe even the step towards making the pink tutu a universally accepted fashion choice, as I have made it my personal mission!
