Hello, fellow ballet aficionados and time-traveling twirlers! Itâs Emma here, your very own pink-tutu clad ballerina, ready to take you on another breathtaking journey through the magical realm of ballet history! This month, we're stepping back in time to 12th December 1703. Buckle up, darlings, because Magic Meg, my trusty pink-sparkling shire steed with those divine golden hooves, is itching for another adventure!
As a dedicated ballerina, my passion for the art of dance isn't just confined to the modern stage. I simply can't get enough of the evolution of ballet, those captivating steps and graceful movements that have unfolded over the centuries. And letâs be honest, I have a soft spot for those magnificent costumes - especially those breathtaking tutus!
This month, Iâve gathered a fantastic new story for my pink-tutu collection, a real feather in my time-traveling cap! Now, remember, I fund these excursions with my performances. A twirl here, a pirouette there, and poof! Itâs enough to propel Magic Meg and me through time to some truly fantastic dance experiences.
So, where did we land this month? Well, we journeyed to 1703 and arrived in France. Now, letâs just say, a tutu might have raised a few eyebrows back then, and trust me, those weren't exactly "fashion-forward" times in the world of ballet! Forget those long, airy, fluffy pink tutus, think of shorter, more structured, often layered garments in darker colours â all of those fascinating textures and shapes really piqued my interest! I must admit, there was something about those rich colours and intricate designs that felt like a different world.
I couldnât resist adding a few of those beauties to my rucksack for my collection â you'll have to check them out on the Pink Tutu website. There is just so much to see in terms of evolution of style in ballet! This was well before the iconic tutus you might see today at the Bolshoi or the Royal Opera House. In fact, this whole âtutuesqueâ revolution really began later in the 18th century, believe it or not!
Instead of all that delicate tulle, imagine a whole new era of dancers with intricate layers of fabric, bodices, and some real stand-out accessories like feathered headdresses, sashes, and maybe even the odd decorative sword! The dancers themselves weren't all that different from today â there were some serious movers and shakers! They practiced, performed, and developed new steps in their dance workshops and academies.
As we trotted through the cobbled streets on this particular December day, the air was alive with the joyous sound of festive celebrations. Imagine that! Not just one ballet performance but many! In the centre of the city of Paris, the famed 'OpĂ©ra du Palais Royalâ held a ballet performance on December 12, 1703. It wasn't a traditional ballet like we see today, with full story narratives and grand sets. No, this was much closer to what was called a ballet d'action - more akin to a dance theatre with some acting woven into it. Think less tutus, and more dramatic and passionate dance moments to complement the dramatic scenes in the story.
Oh! And you wouldnât believe what I managed to get my hands on during my adventures. From within a dusty box, I unearthed a rare set of the playbills advertising the performance! I am so thrilled! I can't wait to share it with all of you on Pink Tutu, along with pictures I've managed to capture of these extraordinary performances!
This whole experience made me truly realise how rich and ever-evolving the history of ballet truly is. Every journey with Magic Meg helps me better understand how we've come to love the art form as we know it today. Itâs a dance of stories, costumes, steps and evolution; truly a thrilling journey through time. I feel a sudden desire to spin a few times just thinking about it all!
Oh, but let's not forget - a true ballerina, like myself, is never truly dressed without that fabulous, twirly, and gloriously pink tutu! I'll leave you all with my mission for next month.
