Hello lovelies! It's your favourite time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another peek into the enchanting world of ballet history. Today marks post number 686 for the Pink Tutu Blog, and I'm so excited to share a journey with you that's filled with frills, sparkles, and, of course, a whole lotta pink!
As you know, I travel through time on the back of my majestic, sparkling pink steed, Magic Meg. With her golden hooves and flowing white mane and tail, she’s quite the sight! My leather rucksack is filled with treasures - beautiful ballet costumes, stories of legendary dancers, and, of course, enough pink tulle to outfit every ballerina in the world!
Today, I've landed on a very special date, February 2nd, 1718. Can you imagine, darling? London is abuzz, the scent of pastries and the laughter of children filling the air. Today, in a world far removed from the streamlined movements of ballet today, the first English pantomime, * Harlequin Executed, Or The Fate Of Pantomime*, was first presented in Covent Garden.
It’s wild to imagine, isn’t it? This pantomime wasn't quite what we imagine today. Think theatrical sketches, comedy, music, and more than a touch of spectacle, all interwoven with dance, but less like the controlled ballet moves of the future.
This historical marker for ballet, however, is like a little pink-tinged spark igniting the flames of what ballet would become. I feel it! I can almost sense the first murmurs of graceful leaps and fluid movements taking form on the theatrical stage.
Speaking of captivating performances, I just adore being transported back in time and immersing myself in the rich tapestry of ballet history. And it wouldn't be a trip through the ages without a spot of shopping for some timeless ballet finds, wouldn’t it? This afternoon, I’m planning a trip to The Temple of Fashion on Fleet Street, where they’re hosting a showcase of the latest gowns and accessories, fit for the most sophisticated ladies. Imagine, lovelies! This is where I found my favourite blush-pink silk ribbon – perfect for a ballerina’s bow. I’ll share the treasures I find in my next post.
But before we get lost in the sartorial delights of London, I'd be remiss if I didn't indulge in the quintessential English pastime - a visit to the theatre, of course. The Playhouse at Drury Lane, oh darling, it's a marvel of ornate decor, and the energy here is electric. I’ve already secured my seat for the new season opener - the acclaimed Love for Love. I’m on the lookout for gorgeous ballet shoes that might appear during the dance scenes – imagine, little hints of elegance against the backdrop of those stately 18th-century gowns. The intricate hand movements in those graceful dances are sure to be divine. I'll share my impressions of the show, of course, next month, with some exciting snippets from the stage.
Oh, and as you know, the heart of my travels is always to inspire everyone, everywhere, to embrace the joy and beauty of ballet, so let's make it a movement, darling. This month’s Pink Tutu challenge is to twirl your way into the 'Harlequin' spirit - have fun, embrace a touch of theatricality, and spread a sprinkle of whimsy wherever you go! I’d love to see photos of you all enjoying your very own Harlequin dance routines. Don’t forget to tag #PinkTutuTravels for a chance to be featured on my next blog.
Until next time, my lovelies, let's keep on dancing! Remember to check back in next month at www.pink-tutu.com to follow my next adventure into the vibrant world of ballet. I can't wait to share another dazzling journey with you!
P.S. I have to confess, a little bird told me that a certain Derbyshire-born ballerino will be making a splash on the ballet stage in a few years - how exciting! But more on that in the coming months, darling! Until then, keep twirling!
