Pink Tutu Time Travel - Post #688: 1718, 4th April - A Parisian Ballet Blitz! 🩰

Hello lovelies! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Time Travel, your monthly dose of all things ballet and time-hopping fun! This month, we're heading to a city brimming with excitement, innovation, and, of course, the enchanting world of ballet – Paris, 1718! Buckle up, my darlings, because we're about to embark on a whirlwind tour of this pivotal era in ballet history, and I can guarantee you won't be disappointed!

But before we step into the time machine (that’s my trusty, sparkly steed Magic Meg, a shire horse with golden hooves and a magnificent white mane and tail – so glamorous, don't you think?), I have to share my newest ballet acquisition! A stunning, hand-painted porcelain doll, her dress crafted in delicate silks, with a little pink tutu just like mine – such a perfect little keepsake from the 18th century! It’s nestled safely in my leather rucksack, amongst other treasures from my journeys.

Now, where were we? Ah, yes, 1718 Paris! Imagine the scene – cobblestone streets bustling with horse-drawn carriages, charming cafes filled with lively chatter, and a buzz of excitement for the arts! In 1718, ballet was enjoying a period of growth and innovation. Ballet masters, like Pierre Beauchamp, were developing new techniques, and audiences were eagerly lapping up the spectacle. I just adore that energy!

My Parisian adventures began with a visit to the Palais-Royal – it was positively buzzing with the anticipation of a new ballet production. You see, ballets in those days were an opulent spectacle, combining drama, music, and dance to create an immersive experience. The very air vibrated with the grandeur of the performance!

Can you believe that ballets even had spoken dialogue? I’m talking actual storytelling integrated into the dance – just picture a ballet dancer speaking lines between the graceful pirouettes and breathtaking jumps!

Speaking of graceful pirouettes and jumps, 1718 was all about the introduction of innovative steps. Think sissonnes and arabesques, steps that added fluidity and dynamism to the movements, allowing the dancers to truly express themselves!

Oh, and the costumes! Think billowing skirts, elaborate bodices adorned with jewels, and hats bedecked with plumes. So romantic, wouldn't you agree?

But the real highlight of my Parisian ballet pilgrimage was seeing a performance of Jean-Baptiste Lully's "Armide" - the perfect encapsulation of the grandeur and emotional power of 18th century ballet! It was a masterpiece! The choreography was complex, with intricate movements and powerful gestures – truly awe-inspiring. And then there was the music, rich and emotional, filling the theatre with magic. The passion and drama on stage swept me away, leaving me spellbound!

And just imagine my joy, lovelies! In this incredible city, I stumbled upon a charming, tucked away ballet boutique. Its windows were filled with exquisite silks and velvets - all in shades of blush pink, my absolute favourite! A true ballet lover's paradise. I walked out with a beautiful pink silk scarf, the perfect little souvenir from my Paris ballet adventure!

While exploring the shops, I also met some wonderfully charming people! There were dancers, tailors, and even a music composer. They were so interested to hear about the ballet scene in the 21st century – it was almost like we were dancing a ballet of time travel, sharing our passion for the art across the ages.

In fact, one of my new friends was a talented composer – he even composed a short, lively piece inspired by my pink tutu! He called it “The Pink Tutu Waltz.” How romantic, don’t you think? He gave me a handwritten score – another treasured addition to my ballet collection! He said he was going to share his new piece with his fellow musicians – how thrilling! Perhaps we’ll see “The Pink Tutu Waltz” performed in one of my future time travel adventures.

But you know what else I discovered during this exciting journey? The 1718 Paris ballet scene, like ours today, was about so much more than just the steps and the spectacle. It was about creating an immersive world for the audience, weaving together music, story, and the beauty of dance into a singular artistic experience. Isn’t that wonderful?

So there you have it, lovelies, a little glimpse into my fabulous Parisian escapade! I can’t wait to see what exciting ballet journeys lie ahead in the coming months – and remember, everyone can embrace the joy of ballet! So grab your tutus, lace up your ballet shoes, and join me on my next exciting adventure!

Until next time, lovelies!

Emma xoxo
