Pink Tutu Time Travel - Post 709: A New Year's Day with a Tutu Twist!

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, ready to whisk you back in time for another dose of ballet history! This month, we're celebrating the first day of a brand new year - January 1st, 1720 - and trust me, it's going to be a fabulous journey!

As always, Magic Meg (my trusty steed who shimmers like a pink marshmallow under the moon with her golden hooves and flowing mane) and I have been poring over the historical records. I tell you, finding a bit of ballet magic in the past is like searching for a shimmering diamante on a pile of glittering dust - but when you find it, oh darling, it's exquisite!

This month, our historical adventure begins in my very own Derbyshire, England! That's right, we're staying local (which, after all, is what everyone should do now and then)!

Dancing Back in Time to Derbyshire!

On January 1st, 1720, life was certainly different in Derbyshire. While the ladies of the era probably wouldn't be seen sporting a pink tutu (imagine the scandal!), dance was still a vital part of their lives. In fact, many a country house hosted lavish balls and dances, with guests adorned in silks and satins. You can bet they danced the night away to a merry jig, perhaps even a graceful minuet.

Think of the elegant movement, the sparkling costumes, the soft melodies. It must have been absolutely delightful to waltz through the rooms, the polished floorboards reflecting the flickering candlelight. We'll have to revisit this era and try out a country dance with Meg - imagine, she’d be perfect in her own custom-made, shimmery saddle!

A World Wide Whirlwind of Ballet!

And while we're exploring 1720 in Derbyshire, remember, the world of dance is vast! Over on the continent, ballet was blossoming. Italy, France, and even the Spanish kingdoms were awash with exciting ballets and burgeoning dance schools. Imagine the fantastic fashion and the elaborate choreography! I simply must find a time travelling portal to these beautiful, balletic places…

On this day, January 1st, 1720:

  • The Royal Ballet of Spain: Now, this is a ballet that needs a spot in our travel log! It had a captivating history even at this time - imagine the grace of the Spanish dances! Maybe I'll grab my new feather boa and head to Spain myself next month…

  • The Parisian Dance Schools: Paris, darling, was simply a fount of elegant and innovative dance at this time! Ballet schools were blossoming and dancers were developing their techniques to astounding heights! One can only dream of stepping into those beautiful ballet studios, wouldn't it be wonderful to have a glimpse into the classes of that era?

  • A Ballet Bonanza: The ballet world, even in the year 1720, was bursting with innovation and creativity. From Italy to France and even into Spain, dancers were constantly exploring new ways to express themselves through movement, stories, and, of course, spectacular fashion!

Pink Tutus & A Time Travel Shopping Spree!

Of course, my adventures wouldn't be complete without some shopping! What better time than the start of a new year to find some ballet-themed treasures, whether it’s an old vintage ballet book or a shimmering ballet-inspired pin? Even though the perfect pink tutu wasn't exactly in style in the 18th century, that doesn’t mean I won’t find a fabulous gown fit for a ballerina at some glamorous market or historical antique shop!

Just picture it, a luxurious silks shop filled with velvet ribbons, exquisite fabrics, and decadent gowns, with me nestled amongst the stacks of luxurious textiles. How exciting, and fabulous, to see what fashionable ballet clothing exists before the days of the classic pink tutu. And with a little twirl of my time-travel wand, I could easily design a stunning outfit from the era for myself and Meg, for the next ballet ball we attend, don't you think?
