Post 881: 5th May, 1734 - A Ballet Bonanza in Baroque Berlin!

Hello, my lovelies! It’s your favourite pink tutu-wearing ballerina blogger, Emma, here with another fabulous journey through time, thanks to the magic of my trusty steed, Meg! She’s a sight to behold, my dear, with her sparkling pink coat, golden hooves, and flowing white mane and tail. Why, even the pigeons stop and stare!

Today’s adventure takes us all the way to Berlin, 1734, a date that's synonymous with one of the most influential ballet figures of the 18th century: Carl Heinrich Hiller. It was on this day, 5th May, that Carl made his grand debut as a choreographer for the Königliche Hofoper.

Can you imagine the excitement? My bag’s crammed with my pink feather boa, some perfectly frilly stockings, and a tiny silver pocket mirror – all the essentials for a chic 18th century look! I'm feeling the vintage vibes already!

This trip to Berlin is particularly thrilling as it coincides with one of the golden ages of ballet history, a time when Germany was experiencing a real ‘Ballet Boom’. From dazzlingly elegant ensembles to powerful leaps and graceful ballets d’action, German ballet was a powerhouse on the European stage!

Carl Hiller himself was a true innovator, creating works of astounding virtuosity and intricate movement, breaking new ground in his choreography. You can sense the power of his genius through the archives, imagining how his performances ignited the hearts of the Berlin public!

It’s difficult to describe the magic of this era, but just imagine! We're in a period where elaborate sets, ornate costumes, and dazzlingly dramatic storytelling captivated the audiences, much like our modern ballet performances do today. Just think of all the wonderful opportunities for vibrant, intricate designs and dazzling pink tutu creations!

I can picture those performances – think soaring jumps, complex footwork, and perhaps a little bit of swordplay – all combined with expressive storytelling, capturing the heart of the audiences and inspiring the next generation of ballerinas and choreographers!

There’s nothing quite like watching a live ballet, right? To feel the music course through you, to see the stories unfold, and to witness the dedication and passion of the dancers.

That’s exactly what I'm doing today. Dressed in my fanciest, pinkest tutu (the one with the sequined butterflies) I’m attending the première of a new work by Hiller. It's going to be breathtaking, my dears!

Here's what I know so far about the program:

  • 'The Triumph of Love and Beauty' – This is a piece known for its breathtaking dances, captivating melodies, and symbolic depiction of victory. I'm expecting a real rollercoaster of emotions!

  • 'The Royal Hunt' – It’s a ballet that incorporates some impressive acrobatic sequences – definitely worth keeping an eye on those incredible leaps and spins!

  • 'The Awakening of the Spring' – With a focus on graceful movements and a delicate sense of storytelling, I can’t wait to be swept away by its captivating charm!

It’s not all about the ballet performances though, dear readers. We must always make time for shopping, mustn’t we? So, off to the boutiques and markets, where I'm on the lookout for some exquisite, delicate fabrics, perfect for incorporating into my future tutu designs. I imagine some soft pinks, silk ribbons, and a touch of luxurious velvet, creating a dream-like Parisian style for my future masterpiece!

Remember, the world of ballet isn't confined to the stage! It’s a beautiful universe filled with passion, creativity, and timeless elegance. Every era offers a glimpse into its own unique perspective on movement, beauty, and artistry, and today I'm soaking up all that Baroque Berlin has to offer.

The excitement of this historical adventure fills my heart! I hope my tale today has inspired you to explore the fascinating world of ballet history, dear readers.
