Hello gorgeous ballet lovers! Emma here, ready to whisk you away on a time-travelling escapade, with my trusty steed, Magic Meg, our pink, shimmering Shire horse. This month we're pirouetting back to the 8th August, 1738 - a truly momentous day in the ballet world!
As I always say, pink is a power colour and, you guessed it, my pink tulle tutu is on, shimmering and ready to take on the delights of the 18th century. My trusty leather rucksack is packed, ready to hold all the delightful stories and snippets of fashion that I'll collect on this exciting trip.
Fashion Through the Ages:
You know me, a pink tutu needs to be matched with the perfect ensemble. Luckily, 18th century fashion was a vision in powder-blue silk and soft ruffles. My hair is curled and powdered just like the ladies of the time, with a sparkling tiara sitting perfectly above my forehead. Oh, the delights of ballet history!
Our 1738 Ballet Destination: Paris, The Heart of Dance
Today we find ourselves in the heart of the ballet world, Paris. The Paris Opera House, a magnificent structure in all its Baroque glory, is teeming with activity!
While this ballet enthusiast would be ecstatic to catch a performance, there isn't one planned for today! Instead, I will head to the dance schools. It’s in these institutions where the future of ballet, literally, lies.
The Art of Training: A Glimpse at 18th Century Ballet Technique
You’d be surprised how much of the classical ballet technique we take for granted today has roots right back in this period! Ballet, during this era, was developing its unique vocabulary. Think gracefully elevated jumps and flowing arabesques. The emphasis was on athleticism mixed with artistry - an exciting time for ballet, just like today!
My time in these Parisian dance schools provides me with an incredible insight into the training methods. Imagine, for instance, students learning from dance masters who set the standards that generations would follow. It’s almost overwhelming to be a part of ballet history in the making! This is the fuel for the pink tutu!
Let's Dance, but in 18th Century Style!
If I weren’t afraid of breaking my back, I’d join the dance class. The 18th-century steps might appear elegant but can be challenging! Imagine attempting leaps in towering heels - not quite what I do when I dance on my pink toes!
My bag is filled with little notes and drawings of their intricate movements. It will come in handy for my ballet students back in Derbyshire. This is exactly what the Pink Tutu Time Traveller loves to do – share the magic of ballet history, bringing the world of dance to life for my little ballerina bunnies.
My Parisian Shopping Spree
A ballet girl is never complete without a good shopping trip, right? This era is just heaven for fabrics. Imagine swathes of silk and brocade in every colour imaginable!
I could lose myself amongst the lace shops for days. Each creation seems like a masterpiece in its own right. Just wait until I show off these incredible finds to the other dancers back in Derbyshire! Perhaps I can even create some costumes that will have my ballet bunnies dancing like the royalty of France.
A Dash of Paris Café Charm
No ballet adventure in Paris is complete without a visit to a charming café! With a delicious cup of coffee and a sweet pastry, I observe the street. Everyone here, from aristocrats to commoners, are captivated by the artistry of the theatre. This passion is a force of nature that transcends time!
Back to the Future: The Importance of Sharing Ballet History
As the sun sets, it’s time to mount Magic Meg. My head is filled with images of a world where dance is both entertainment and art form, with people deeply connected to its spirit. This is exactly why I started this Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog – to help us all rediscover our love of dance and understand how it’s evolved. We might all love our modern interpretations, but the fundamentals, the history and beauty that underpin them, lie deep in our past!
This journey into 1738 has inspired me beyond words. Every little ballet item, each story, each snippet of knowledge I have collected will enrich the lives of my students. I promise to show them all these wondrous snippets of dance history through my next performance!
Next Time: On to a New Time Travel Adventure!
As for you, don’t forget, ballet can be anything, everything, and most importantly, it can be yours to love! Let’s keep this dance party going, shall we? See you next month!
With love, pink sparkles and tutus, Emma
